Many will know this but this should help those that don't. Maybe someone can learn from my mistakes.
If you are running a holiday (or other prime time) campaign on Adwords (especially content network), set your budget as high as you can. If you have to alter your budget during high traffic times, you can count on losing at least 2 hours of traffic.
I originally made this mistake on a Mother's Day promotion. I boosted my budget, "just to be safe". I lost 4 hours and hundreds of conversions.
This fathers day I thought I would prepare properly. I reset my budget at 2 A.M. based on the traffic I saw yesterday and what my expected increase was by looking at my Mothers day traffic patterns. I woke up to 2/3 my budget eaten up by 10 AM.
I was ecstatic and pissed at the same time. So I pumped my budget and watched as most of my traffic halted (I still had YSM and MSN). Strange thing is that Google searches still kicked through at about 1/4 the rate but content was out completely. 2 1/2 hours later I got my traffic back but it seems that my ad positions were slow to get to their normal spot.
Now I'm stuck with mixed emotions. I had the highest grossing holiday yet. But I missed out on a couple k.
Moral: Don't be a fucking dick like me.:anon.sml: Don't waste time trying to predict the traffic patterns if you have the money to spend. Just set your fucking budget astral and don't complicate it.
