What are your thoughts on having all your sites on the same server?

I have about 10 sites on one server and a few others dotted around.

I do this as it works out cheaper. My only thoughts are, what if my server is hacked and malware uploaded - I'd be pretty screwed.

What's your setup?

Not smart. If your sites and landing pages are on the same ip or range it's easy to find more of them if you find one. Say I find a site of yours browsing the web and then reverse ip the domain. It can show everything on that ip or range. Sometimes there isn't a lot you can do if someone is good at investigating. Also, if all your sites are at one place and that particular box goes down, all your sites go down too.

You could check out seohosting.com or something that gives you multiple c classes on one server. This would give a decent amount of bandwidth with 5 different ips(to the c class) meaning they would look like:

123.123.123.1
123.123.162.1
123.123.184.1
123.123.143.1
123.123.175.1

which would keep you out of the scope of potential theft/investigations. If you aren't worried about this kinda stuff then keeping all your sites on 1 server wouldn't be an issue.

There's no issues with having all your sites on the same server. However just make sure the security on it is top notch and keep the updated backups of your files on a regular basis.

im at three different host, all virtual...my adult is someplace, mainstream (different ips, though) is at another and i have one site that's all by itself..

i wouldn't put all my sites on one ip, same server (taking chances). do what the other poster said and get different ips.

are you hostings sites or just pages..

Same Servers

My most important websites I keep on different servers. But I have never had an issue with my hosting company. If you are want to, just talk to the people you are going to host with and also do your research before you buy a package.

If you primary concern is protecting your data, as opposed to anything else (privacy, redundancy) then your best bet is to take regular backups. OR pay for a backup service that automatically backs up your site(s) to a different server/location.

Most webhosts offer the auto backup option (cPanel's Auto backup, and DirectAdmin's cron configured backup) .. so that is one way you could ensure you have your backups in the event the server goes down.
However, the backups are pointless if they are on the same server as your sites. That's because if the server goes down, you not only lose your site(s), but also your backup(s).. unless you have local copies too.

Multiple C Class IP's are one way to go, but don't forget that they're still on the same server. If it goes down, all your site(s) go down, regardless of how many IP's you have.

Not a problem with it at all. Just make sure you have automated backups. Another reason WP is good for getting a content/LP site up fast. WP has a plugin that autoshoots database backups to my gmail accounts daily.

you could do it on the one box but you would need to get dedicated ip's for each as a minimum and if at all possible split them up in to relevant sections then create a dedicated ns for each one... all could run from one box but you need to make them atleast look different to the outside world.
