Ok I was going through my own facebook account and this is a new (at least new to me) app. I actually know this person. But I was thinking there has got to be some way for AMs to exploit this. I doubt I would do anything as I'm not comfortable with being REALLY shady. But anyway, this reminds me of the CL ERS stuff plus I know some people have been trying to do stuff like this on Facebook for awhile and here is this application, just asking for it. What are your thoughts?

I had a similar thought. Or at least what I think is a similar thought.

Turnkey Facebook Apps has a "Who would you do?" turnkey. Place a dating site popup once they vote and you could do quite well.

If anyone tries it, lemmie know how it goes. If it goes really well then just remember it was all my idea and you owe me 50% of your commish.

Good question. (see below) Here is what I don't understand. This stuff is showing up in my news feed BECAUSe I already know her and she's my "friend" So why is it asking if I want to meet her? Maybe because it has a search option? But still, in order to get this application out to the public (that is not on your friends list) I guess you could run it in social ads? There's got to be a better way though. (Btw I feel a little silly that I clicked the "meet me" since a) we already know each other and b) she's going to wonder about me. )

hmmm ok so maybe this is a dumb question but with facebook apps who is running them? LIke Joe shmoe created "hot or not" right? so does Joe then sell it to facebook? or does Joe somehow continue to run it? Who's getting the adsense commissions at the top there, facebook or Joe?

Joe. Joe creates the facebook application and Joe runs it. Facebook is purely just providing the platform for creation.

No, applications are hosted on the creators server as is the mysql database it runs off it. Most of the applications you see are actually running via iFrame or another method (which I forget the name of) of embedding.

Rasher: That certainly explains why the popular apps always have server issues while the crap ones work fine.
I want my daily Maddox quote, dammit!

Turbolapp: That app just looks like a shiner version of "Are you Interested".
I keep getting guys in the Middle East clicking me on that O_o

The "meet me" thing, is it just that if you've both clicked "yes" on each other, it lets you add them to your friend list?
Or does it supply you with details to stalk them with?

Either way, at what point does it allow you to make money from it in a direct sense?
I can understand selling aggregate data on the idiots that install it, as well as generating reports to get more specific info on people's sexual interests as compared to other interests, but I'm thinking a lot of that sort of information is already available from Roy Morgan or something.

I might just be tired, but I'm really not seeing a direct way to make money out of this.

I've written an application for Facebook exactly like this one.

Rasher is right. The applications themsevles need to hosted by the creator of the application on their own servers. The application is developed to work with Facebook via an IFRAME or their own FBML (Facebook Markup Language). Facebook has nothing to do with the application really. They dont control it and they dont make any share of the revenue. It's basically like you made any other web site but it just happens to be shown within the Facebook site.

When the user installs the application, the application can only retrieve their user ID. Creative methods are used to get the user to submit more information like name, location, gender, email address, etc.

Money is made from advertising only. Usually in the case of these "Hot or not" style apps, every 5 or so ratings you submit, the app will interrupt with a full page ad and is further monetized with banners, adsense, and aff offers.

See my sig if interested in developing an app for Facebook. :)

In Hot Or Not, the Meet Me function is simply to get a chance to contact a person. If the idea is to use hot girls to lure desperate guys into affiliate offers, the problem is that you first have to be paying members of Hot or Not in order to send actual messages. Otherwise, all you can do is wink or send default messages created by Hot or Not. That didn't use to be the case, but it is now.
