I have an interesting housing situation that I would like some opinions...

Currently I with my girlfriend, we live in her moms 2 story, 3 bedroom, 2.5 bath condo/townhouse - Her mom lives with her boyfriend about 20 minutes away... I currently pay $650 a month in rent and we have a roomate...

Anyway, my parents live on a 4 acre ranch and my mom just asked me an interesting question...

My mom wants to build 2 modular homes (There not mobile homes....) on the property, one for me and one for my brother...

The location for the houses property wise is pretty close to their house(within like 100 yards) since the back part of our property has horses and cows on it...

My mom is telling me there would be no rent, full utilities, etc.

So pretty much getting a private house for free...

I asked my girlfriend about it and she pretty much flatass said no, since I was talking to her over AIM(im at work) it took some time for to finally tell me that she didnt want to live near my parents...

She now feels bad and just told me she was crying the entire time because I want to do it and she doesnt and she feels like shes ruining everything for me by saying no that she doesnt want to live with me there...

So, my question is, I dont want to piss off my girlfriend or have her leave me but a free private home, no rent, etc. Is a good oppurunity...

What do I do....
 


Honestly, test her out on it man, I mean only reason not to would be she doesn't want to leave her mom paying the whole of the mortgage, or does she just not get along with your parents? So tread lightly there. I personally wouldn't do it because I know my parents would hold something like that above my head & shit, and then I'd be suckered into doing all kinds of shit since " I don't pay any rent.. " I heard enough of that when I lived at home.
Best thing if you want to keep your girl and she doesn't like the idea is hold out for your own place bud.

I agree...even with parents there isn't anything thats really free. They will make you go feed the horses and crap like that. But you have to know your parents too. If you really think it will come without strings, convince your girlfriend that its the best thing for you two. If you have a strong relationship and she respects your decisions, she will follow you wherever.
 
If we were to move out of her moms house her mom would have to sell the house or find renters which is one obstacle....

My girlfriend gets along with my parents but doesnt like the idea of living near them, she even said "If it was down the street it would be fine, but next to them, no"

Right now my monetary obligations are rent, truck payment and credit card, comes out to about $1k a month, if I could knock rent off that I could...do something...

As far as the holding it against me and making me do shit, they did that a little bit when I was younger but have learned at this point they cant pull that shit on either of us...
 
Hey man... I understand where she is coming from.. But if its better for finances, then do it..

Relationships are about give and take, you have to reciprocate and negotiate to make it work.

Trust me I've been there before, I know what I'm talking about. I've given up a lot of shit in the past for chicks and it has never been worth it.
 
Bro it sounds like you're building a friggin commune. And what objection would you have to doing shit to help out your mother if she's building you a house? Get your money right and fend for yourself, show your girlfriend that you can survive without the kindness of family members.

I couldn't live that close to my parents. I love 'em to death but I need to have my space. I don't know what your parents are like but I don't need my mother walking into my house on a Friday night while I'm trying to relax and drink a few beers. It would really irk me.

Cut the apron strings and get your own place when you can afford it. What's $650 a month? Nothing, that's what. If you put your head to it, you can make that $650 and tons more in no time and you know it.

He's got a point, the $650/month you are paying now is next to nothing.

It's not like you are letting you mom move in with you after you can afford your own house and are starting a family- I would never let my fiancee's parents do that!!! You aren't even living in a basement or something - you are getting an actual place to live, unattached from their house!!! I know tons of young people doing this - save money now while you have the chance!!!

I lived at home for a couple of years out of college to save money - and in fact may be forced to do the same thing...four years out of school, with my girl to save up money for a house since we may not be able to otherwise...

Not a big deal when you are young- better to save the money now. (This would be a big deal if you are still living there 10 years from now, and are still letting your mom cook you breakfast!)

This does not apply if you think your parents are going to interfere w/ your life... if they are not going to respect your privacy, and interject w/ their views and opinions often then dont do it!
 
Do you need to live with your girlfriend? She could stay at her place and you could live at yours. Sure it would be like I Love Raymond but thats up to you
 
Not with affiliate marketing, so far I pretty much suck...

$650 a month isnt that much, ill agree, but where I am in California, the median home price is $650K, The average apartment is $1000-$1500+ a month for a 1 bedroom 1 bathroom hole in the wall and even condos similar to the one we live in now go for $350K

Im not trying to justify anything, just explaining that things here tend to be much more expensive then most other places...

If I'm understanding this problem right you have two nice houses on property for $650/month total. Your girlfriend wants to stay in one, you want to stay in the other, the girlfriend wants to live with you but as a guy you naturally don't want to live with her. What was the problem again?

I say take both. Live with her at the cool house with no parental supervision and when she's being a bitch go stay at the other house and get drunk with your parents till she gets over it. If your parents aren't hte cool type and will want to keep tabs on you, the 100ft shouldn't be too bad, you just can't be too loud and have a landline phone. Then just put a bunch of stinky smelly stuff outside between your house and theirs so they won't come over.
 
i agree with your gf man.. i don't want to be within 15 minutes of parents, much less a football field away...

is $650/month worth it to leave someone you could spend the rest of your life with and already spent 2 years with?

Edit: And I was talking about my parents. For my gf's parents... I need to be at least a 3 hour plane ride away at all times ;-).

Currently, me and my girlfriend live together in HER moms condo in Cotati - Her mom and her mom's boyfriend live in Petaluma in her boyfriends house

Cotati is about 10-20 minutes away from Petaluma, depending on which part of Petaluma you are referring to....

My parents also happen to live in Petaluma, on the complete opposite side that faces Cotati on a 4 acre ranch.

My mom wants to build 2 modular homes on the ranch in addition to the huge house thats there now(that my parents live in)... 1 house for me, one for my brother... - Due to having livestock in the back field the 2 modular homes would be like 100 yards away from the main house my parents live in...

There would be no rent, full utilities, a full private house, etc...

My girlfriend doesnt want to because she said it would be a huge change for her and she doesnt want to leave near my parents... She likes my mom, doesnt really care for my dad - My parents do argue once in a while and arent the most loving couple you have ever seen... But its a private house, not like were going to be living in their house...

My mom even said, they never go down to that side of the house anyway and they wouldnt randomly come over or even think about coming over without calling us first...

engaged - Im starting to lean towards the "fuck it" side and just tell my mom I appreciate the offer but no...

As far as her parents are concerned, her mom is fuckin awesome, her dad is cool too but hes an uptight prick most of the time....
