[fucking crazies]

what do you think about them opening up all the GTLDs:

Radical change coming to Net addresses (FAQ) | Deep Tech - CNET News

considering TM law will not let me register .mcdonalds , I guess the question is how did domainers make money back in the 90s besides violating TM of companies?

185k app + 25k yearly aint cheap

You'd have to snag some beastly names

Most brand name sites are giant cluster fucks to begin with. It seems appropriate that they belong on their own little island of exclusive domain extensions to further confuse everyone who wants to use their site for 1 simple purpose but have through click through 10 pages of hype/brand/bullshit to do so.

What I dont understand is who is going to buy .pizza --- is it going to be pizza association of america or some lobbying group and then they will make money off selling dominos their domain dominos.pizza ? it just seems who ever can buy those generic category names (and whos potential members have the biggest pocket) would profit from it.

but bauss is right, ICANN basically said :action-smiley-052: to the small guy with this one.

and why the fuck does it cost 200k? I bet the direct cost associated with setting up .pizza is a lot less than 200k. How could admin setup, registration, dns stuff be over $10k? ICANN is listed as a non-profit too...fuckers

the registrars will be the ones to make the bread on the new gtlds so registrar affiliate offers may be a good upsell as civilians register names

The cost is probably to prevent attempts at GTLD squatting. Still, I don't see this really kicking in for a while, everyone's still going to type in Welcome to Toppers Pizza - Toppers over www.toppers.pizza. Probably going to take a few years to really catch on.

EDIT: What I want to know, if a company were to snatch up a GTLD related to their field first, will they be allowed to resell it to other companies for (ridiculous) sums? Or will the mighty ICANN hand intervene in large niches?

Thats my question. like will the tobacco lobbyists association be able to register the TLD .cigars and then sell optimo (whatever their parent company is) their domain name?

btw, i like optimos gutted for medicinal use :rasta:

From a purely user perspective, this looks really shitty.

There will be lots of money to be made here.
