How can I compare different web host's speed?

There are many factors to testing a hosts speed. One thing you have to remember is that obviously your not the only to go to the site that is hosted. What I am getting to is that your ping times and traceroutes are going to vary upon geolocation etc.
Another thing is that doing a downlaod/upload speed test will not get you accurate results as you are the only hitting the server. It would take numerous connections to see how stable the hosts server really is. Being on a 100mbit line pulling from a 100mbit server will not tell you your pulling 100mb and sometimes give a false reading like 50mbit etc.
Many hosts have multiple servers and those type of tests would be useless if they were accurate not knowing what server you would be placed on.
The best way IMO is to open a ticket with the support desk and ask if they are on 10mbit or 100mbit lines or possibly 1000mbit. Ask for MRTG/RRDTool graphs and Server load for the server you will be placed on.
Ask for a temp shell access so you can see the load yourself and run "top" to see other resources being used. Also check uptime!
Hope this little bit of info helps.

Brilliant, just what I need!
