Hi, I'm newly attending a university and I'm planning to create a school forum my university. How can I kickstart my forum. I know paid poster would not know too much about the things that go on at my university to post any useful content. Also I do not know too many people here to help me with this project. Any suggestion?

Get your classmates to go on there and post. After a month or 2 in the same room with them, the awkwardness will go away. Also, most schools have little bulletin boards all over the place. You will probably need to find out where to go to get them approved, but then you can post ads on them to get them to the forum.

Be creative with your ads and mention something that would be considered an inside joke for students at your school. For example:

"Pedobear Booted From the Skittles Thread. Q & A Tomorrow Night at ..."

Do you want to go with a traditional forum, or more of a facebook type of site?

Traditional forum: phpBB. Upload it to your server, and go to the install. It pratically does the rest for you, other than the actual posting.
Web 2.0 BS: well, there was another thread about it here just today.

Traditional forums're probably easier because discussion can be driven, and social interaction, instead of self glorification, is what powers them.
Anyway, just stick up a whole heap of cheap posters around campus, hand out some freebie shit at campus parties (I've seen sites that will brand condoms and beer coasters... perfect combo) if you can afford to... Otherwise make a cool Tshirt with your URL nice n loud on it and give it some of the campus jocks and bimbos to wear around the place.

I run a paid posting company and depending your budget I can check against current discounts we are offering. If you are looking for ways to keep everyone interested hit up the spots that most students are willing to talk about (sports, local clubs, etc.) PM me if you have any questions.

Have a drawing for active posters. Free cash, unless there is something that you think they'd want more.

Facebook promotion, event sponsorship, holding a contest, and getting written up in your school newspaper would be the winning formula from what I've seen.

Spread a rumor that there is a nude pic of one of the faculty or one of the popular hot-chicks on campus, on the forum and to see it people have to sign up (then leave a "removed" due to legal action, with a message that the pic will be posted again within the next 2 days once it's resolved).

Make sure you have all your categories ready to roll and put a limit that they have to sign up first and make at least one or two real posts to see the "images".
