So I was reading The recipe for a $200K per year job and was inspired to create my own directory site. Today I bought a domain as the first step but I'm still waiting for DNS to propagate. I also purchased WFReview, I can't wait to try it.

I plan on creating directory categories such as dining, bands, parks, bars, etc. So far I have just one question... How do I differentiate my directory site from all those other directory sites? Or does differentiation not even matter for this objective?

A nice clean looking website would be fine as long as its not cheap. The main focus would be getting the pages ranking well. You could have an amazing looking website but if someone type "Restaurants in location" and you are no where to be found it will be hard to sell.

After reading that thread a while ago I build a yellow pages scraper, scraped a few 1000 pages of info and was going to put them on the site for free and try up-sell them by showing results.
Eg
:
you are currently receiving 200 visits from us a month, if you upgrade your package ...

I was going to send an email then do a follow up call. I got stuck with the SEO part so its sitting on the back burner till I learn more.

Yeah I was thinking about how to overcome the SEO part too... Would it help if you added some unique content (i.e. local reviews) to your directory? I think Google tends to like that.
