Hey all, how do I find out/test if niche ideas have longevity with good competition? I don't have a huge budget for ppc so ill be making a wordpress blog and going SEO.

i dont think there is a way to " test " a niche per say. I mean when Ray Kroc decided to buy Mcdonald's in the 50's how was he to know if it was going to succeed or not?

When Sam Walton opened his 1st store in Bentonville AR, how was he to know he was going to be filthy stinkin rich ?

Just take an idea, put as much effort as you possibly can and let the succes gods work it out ....in the end you will have at least known if it worked or not

Look on Clickbank marketplace are there products in that niche.
Vendors who create product on CB did deep research before they created product, so if there are products with gravity on CB that means there is profit in that niche.
Look on paid ads on google - more paid ads means more money in niche.
Check ebay, Amazon and other marketplaces.

If you're going SEO, then just check out the current competitors for your keyword. Are there lots of them? Have they been around for a while? Are their sites specifically monetized? If so, then it's probably a pretty steady niche. Google adwords keyword tool and google trends can also help fill in the gaps.

Basically what eat it, murphy said. Do your research real deep before hand and split test to find the optimal keywords and focus on those.

Niche testing ... a few extra thoughts

There are a few things you can do to narrow it down.

First, be sure that it IS a niche. "Dating" is a huge market, for example, but it's much too big to be called a niche. Over 50s dating in Southern California ... that's more like a niche!

Second, look at it from the other end: is it so small that there'll be no meaningful market for it? Breeding toy poodles might be a niche, but "toy poodle's toenail clippings" would just be for a handful of weirdos!

Third ... does the market actually want to spend money in the niche? "Getting over heartbreak" is a moderate sized niche, but most people are looking for free poems or pictures of broken hearts. They don't want to buy a book or a course, for example. But "how to get your ex back" is a red hot commercial niche!

How to test? Easy! Google will tell you - and all for free.

First, go to the big G and type in your search term just as you would if you were a regular punter. Is the first page mostly Wikipedia entries, blog posts and free articles? If they are, then the sellers aren't working too hard to get their sites onto page 1 for that topic ... and that's often a clue. (Not definitive - you're only information gathering at this stage).

And how many ads are there on the right hand side? If those ads are still unique three pages deep, you've probably got something with some commercial value.

Okay, now check from the other end. Go to Google's free keyword tool, (just search for it on Google) and type in your keyword again. Google will not only show you 100 related searches, (800 if you have an Adwords account but don't worry about that for now), but there'll also be a little green or white or green and white box beside each entry. The more green it is the more competition there is for PPC - which means people are spending money on that search term - and so there's money in it somewhere too!

That's still only the tip of the iceberg, but it's a darn site more scientific than thinking a bunch of people must be interested in it because you are! (That's how I used to do it and it cost me a fortune - and a lot of wasted time too).

Hope that helps - and good luck.

Dont spend money on PPC, spend what you have to build up the site. Do SEO. Testing with PPC will not work if you dont know what you are up to. Try to build up site for organic traffic and then to PPC and all.

It depends on what you mean....do you mean test you niche in terms of SEO or test it terms affiliate marketing?

If you include some more details, I'll be glad to help.

honestly, with all the time you spend researching - you could spend doing some slave labor off CL to save up a PPC budget of like $100. You're literally buying your way to the first page, so if your adspend caps out at $10/day - you can only guess what months of SEO will accomplish you.

I would use google adwords for looking for keywords, I go for exact searches myself, preferably 5,000 or less for each keyword phrase. I find this gives me the best chance of getting my blogs to page 1 using SEO. Also use the Yahoo site explorer tool to check out the competition of top 3 for each keyword phrase you want to rank for in google. The yahoo site explorer will give you the number of backlinks that your competition has. It helps makes a decision easier to go for a niche and a keyword phrase.

You could check out Google Trends as well.

Use your common sense too. Google has sometimes implied to me with their keyword tool in Adwords that there isn't enough traffic to bother posting certain ads - and yet I sell more products relating to those keywords than the others!

1. Install SEOQuake toolbar 2. Search for your keyword on Google 3. Analyze top 10 of them 4. That's it, you'll know you can beat them or not

A lot of it has to do with common sense and what do YOU think people will still be interested in 5 years from now.

If you are going into a big market, it pays to specialize. Find your angle to hit in the niche and corner that market until it spits out money like there is no tomorrow.

And depending on your resources, you can start building your own brand in the niche so that you have some sort of longevity instead of pushing everyone elses offer 24/7.

Sure it might take some time to be branded in your specialized niche, but the payoff will be more than worth it in the end.
