how do you get backlinks?

What method works best for you? directories? personally emailing sites?

I found that directories take a while for me to work, I submitted to like 300 directories a while back with a site I had, and it took at least 6 months for my site to get any sort of backlinks from the directories.

The thing that has worked best for me is trading links and Wikipedia
