How granular is your testing?

when testing, do you typically create 10s or even 100s of ads, making only a slight change to each?

ie make an ad targetting an age group and a city and a sex
then change the city...make xx ads for yy cities.
then chance the sex...make xx ads for the same yy cities

how many ads do you end up making in total?

im testing out adsonar, and i have so many options for where i want the placements...way more granular than facebook obviously. im targetting brides to be, and 'the knot' , 'in style', 'wedding channel' etc are all on there, as well as individual pages for each. in total there are about 150 places i could put my ad. for optimal testing should i try all 150? then switch 1 variable, and do another 150?

just trying to get a rough idea of how people are doing this. please be gentle:

for your convenience i have included some cookie cutter responses:

  1. "here is a good guide for that info - www.dickroll.com"
  2. makemoniesonline.com
  3. go to DP. you can buy a book that will tell you that

also, here is some worksafe eyecandy for your trouble

cheers

There is no specific formula, split test all variables (titles, descriptions, images, landing pages, traffic sources, etc etc). Run through many to eliminate the bad performers and keep the winners.
