I'm thinking of moving into the city for a few years just for the experience of living in NYC.

How many of you guys live there aside from Jon? Like it?

I wanted to go somewhere warm and perfect, but I kind of see that as being more of a long-term thing. I have the money now and want to experience as much of life as possible, and to me there would be nothing like living in NYC.

Nothing better than NYC in terms of food, nightlife, and diversity.

In terms of living somewhere with your "money", unless you have 2-3 million to spare, the best you'll get is a apartment with 500 SQ FT and a doorman.

You can get a decent apartment for $4K per month. Probably around 800-1000 sqft. in midtown or upper west side. Soho, chelsea, villages, tribeca will cost a bit more.

Do it. I grew up in CT, a quick train ride into the city. I recently moved to AZ because I hate the cold weather, but you're right - there's nothing like NYC. I miss it a lot, just not so much in the Winter. It's frigid, and you're basically walking everywhere - not fun IMO. But, if you can stand the cold and afford the cost of living (you'll def be paying a few k/month for a decent apt), you'll be amongst the best shopping, dining, nightlife, etc. in the country. GL.

For 3-4k, you'll be living in some pretty shitty neighborhoods with apartments that houses the cities "finest" escorts. That is unless you move into dumbo Brooklyn, which is right across the bridge from Manhattan.

Up to $2500 puts you in those shit neighborhoods. At $4K you're in some nice areas... definitely not the tops, but still nice.

Brooklyns not bad, Queens either. But then you become the dreaded "Bridge and Tunnel people"

Born and raised on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, i'm away at college at the moment, but i'll be moving back after graduation. You're right there's no place like the city.

You said your looking long term, so I'll assume your looking to buy, for a decent place in the city (Manhattan) you're looking at a couple of mill plus maintenance & taxes. I have no clue how much you make or have in the bank, but it's all relative. Having "the money" and ballin out in small town USA(assuming), is very different from the cost of living(and partying) in NYC, you'll quickly be humbled.

That's not to say you can't live here and have a good time, there are plenty of people in Manhattan that get by on egregious salaries. You can get a decent crib for around 3k a month.

If you move to NYC, hit me up, we can hang out.

Or you could just get an apartment in Forest Hills, Queens and have a pretty good living ground. Plus the train station is like a block away.

The numbers in this thread are a little bit of an overstatement. You can find a really solid one bedroom in a lot of neighborhoods for $3k-$4k.

I grew up there, but moved to Michigan 10 years ago. Can't go back to live there again. Once you leave for a while, you see what life is without sirens, people screaming all the time, car horns blasting, and constantly being around people. It's actually quite hard to be alone there.

When I moved here, I couldn't get a good nights sleep for the first six months... it was too quiet.

I'm the only member of my family that lives outside the city but my brother pays $3,300 a month for a 2br 1 bath in Chelsea probably around 800 sq feet. My sister lives about 10 minutes away from there in Riverdale and pays 3 br $1800 for about a 1400 sqft apt.

I lived in a decently crappy apartment in NYC this summer, but loved every minute of being in the city. You don't even need to pay $3-4000 a month to get a nice place in NYC - There are plenty of good deals for less.

I am curious to see what it costs for parking in those 3-4k neighborhoods. Any of you living there own cars?
