How Much Memory for a 3 Hour Video

There was a thread posted a day or two ago about some kids from MIT who used a weather balloon to carry a camera 18 miles up and take pics of the Earth. My friend and I want to do that but with a video camera.

If I'm going to record 3-4 hours of continuous film, what size memory card would I need? The MIT students took a picture every 5 seconds and stored it all on an 8GB card, but I know video takes up a lot more space.

Average quality? I'm just trying to figure out if it'd be possible with a smaller budget. I don't want to blow a bunch of money when a bunch of things could go wrong. So if it's going to cost too much I'll just use the camera idea.

it's definitely possible, you just need to be able to record to mp4, H.264 even better if you can find an affordable camera to do it. at VGA resolution, I dunno, you're looking at 1mbit per second?

1mbit = 1/8 megabyte per second, 125KB/sec, so 4 hours, 1,800,000KB so like, 2GB.

be safe, use an 8GB card
 
Just get a camcorder with HD and you shouldn't have any problem with storage. They aren't too expensive either.
 
Get a few models old Canon Powershot and an 8gb card. They do 640x480 at fairly decent quality. That's around $150-200 for both. Then get a disposable Boost Mobile phone and set it up with something like Google Latitude. It may or may not need an extended battery, but it will make it a whole lot easier to retrieve the camera after it falls.
