If anyone could help that would be appreciated. 2 examples I have are below. I just don't know how specific the niche needs to be. Thanks!

Sports
Baseball
MLB
New York Teams
New York Yankees
New York Yankee Merchandise

Video Games
Sony
PS3
PS3 Halo 3

Your question is impossible to answer. Everything varies by industry, by category, by topic... and most of all... by the concept and strategy you implement for your site.

Why don't you make a few sites, each with a different "level" of focus? Make a bunch of sites and see what works and what doesn't. Gradually move towards what works.

That's another thing. Some things work for me but won't work for you and vice versa. You need to find what types of sites YOU are good at making and marketing. The only way to find out that info is to try making some sites.

So go build some shit and come back with results on your different "focus levels" and I'm sure you'll be able to answer that yourself.

:D

Yeah what trig said. If you ask a better question you'll get a better answer. That's very vague. i pick a niche we'll say finance and build 10k sites in it. But if you're going to build one site or one campaign then I'd get more granular like ps3 halo 3. However again this depends on your budget, about.com is a single site covering the niche "information". So where I started, if you ask a better question you'll get a better answer.

Budget and the amount of info/content you could provide would be the deciding factor. Go for the one that you have good knowledge or experience on. That's how you choose a specific niche.

I agree with the other posters, but it definitely should NOT be TOO specific...

e.g.... Funky Furniture would be okay...
e.g.2... Green Marble Oak Funky Furniture With Rocket Boosters is TOO specific...

Disagree with you. It depends on what his budget is and what he wanna concentrate on. If its a single site and a niche which can sell then its good to be very precise.

While it does depend on what he wants to do (organic traffic or ppc), if there is not enough demand because something is too specific you aren't going to get anywhere.

If Green Marble Oak Funky Furniture With Rocket Boosters had 3 searches per year, but funky furniture had 10k it would just be retarded targeting something so specific.

Really? 10k is better than 3?

I take back everything I've said about you, you're a genius.
