How to decide on keywords

I've now got a VPS up and running with prosper, and signed up to some offers on Commission Junction, and I'm just about to create my first landing page. I will then create a campaign on Microsoft Adcentre. To do this I need keywords.

What I want to know now, is how to I go about choosing my keywords? I was just going to google / bing search for phrases that I think would work well and see if I get results which are relevant to my offer.

I think most people get the keywords first, then do some of the things you have mentioned.

I start with the google keyword tool. You also might want to check the commercial intent of whatever keywords you choose so you don't waste money on queries that are unlikely to produce conversions. For this you can use microsoft's OCI tool:
