How to get a domain that is "taken" but no whois record in registrar?

hey guys,

There's a domain I have my eye on. There's no site there, but every domain company says it's taken. When I try to do a whois to contact the guy directly and see if he's willing to sell it, I always get a "no match in the registrar database".

So I can't even see when the domain expires.

Anyone know how I can get this domain or at least the whois info? Google has given me shifty answers.

Domain tools says its in "redemption period".

You have to keep an eye on the status. It's in the control of the registrar right now, so you can't get it directly from the previous owner. You'll have to wait until it drops or the previous owner renews it. The redemption period on average is ~30 days, then it will likely change status to 'pending delete' for maybe a week. Then it gets dropped and anyone can register it.

Backordering will only work if the person doesn't renew it anyway. I'm guessing they charge alot more. Also I thought Redemption Period lasted 90 days? Or is it roughly 90 days from expiry that it goes back into the public domain?

The redemption period is 30 days, and is handled by VeriSign and ICANN.

Some registrars have "grace" periods, where when a domain expires it is not deleted (so that they can spam you with emails to renew the domain that already expired). This can add on another 30 or more days before it goes into redemption period.

Your best bet is to get it through one of the backordering services.

Namejet.com
snapnames.com
pool.com

Namejet seems to get their hands on the most of them. The minimum price you'll pay will be $69 on namejet, or $59 on the other two. If someone else backorders the name as well it will go to auction.

If you want to just sit back and hope it falls free again and you'll be able to register it for 8 bucks or whatever, that's risky. Not many good domains slip past backorders.

Dropday.com is a nice little service to browse them all, if needed. They just started offering a paying service but I think you can work your way around for now.
