Ok, my girlfriend has asked me how to create bad ass music like Deadmau5 et al, and I definitely want to foster this interest in her. She's good at music, so I think she'll come up with some bad ass beats I can then steal and put my name on.
"ncmedia to the front desk please....ncmedia...to the front desk"
...that's why it has such a bad rep.

Deadmau5 is an FL Studio user and Eminem's recent hit Not Afraid was made by a dude who rocks FL Studio, forget his name. That Pitbull/Ne-Yo song on the airwaves at the moment is also made in FL Studio, so yes its more than possible to make a million dollar hit on your laptop.
A lot of producers now days are from the FL Studio generation. A good portion of stuff you hear on the radio can literally be made on a net book with FL installed. You don't even need a MIDI keyboard, you can literally play keys with your QWERTY keyboard.
Despite what elitist musician fucks say, A program is only as good as the brain behind it and you can do anything that Reason/Logic etc can do in FL Studio. It's just people have their preferences with creative workflow.
The only gripe about FL Studio is that 90% of the people who use it are kids who downloaded the program on The Pirate Bay and who have no idea about music theory, putting notes and chords together, how to use EQ's, compressors, limiters and how to mix/master properly, that's why it has such a bad rep.
Holy fuck I had no idea this was so god damn complicated. I love it.
Aaron: DJ is way different that what Im talking about here. Intel wants to compose her own shit, not mix other peoples stuff.
thx.
Enigma: I'd get myself a few things if you want to take it to a semi-pro level.
(linking to ebay shit)
1. Cubase (or protools or logic on mac - or others i.e. fruityloops, ableton, reason.. any sequencer that takes vst's or that IS a vst that you can plug into bigger daw's)
2. An aftermarket sound card i.e. Steinberg CI2
3. A few VST's (hypersonic should get you going)
4. A midi controller
5. A USB midi Reader
6. Ozotope for mastering
The usual diagram I show peeps, the mixing board is optional but I need it re all the audio shit I do - if you're just making beats with VST's and or adding some vocals you should be fine with just the sound card and whatever you decide to plug into it (It's more so your PC runs optimally with rich audio and has no latency/lag vs. your motherboard/factory sound card).

The dubturbo kit is good for beginners but you'll probably cap it quick - if you want a copy hollar.
There's other standalone systems and more coming out every day - But I'm still fond of actual setups like above with real DAW's/multitrackers..
Feel free to PM me if you want more advice/have Q's.
