i got the idea to start this thread from miller2348's thread. any way i would like to start investing. i only get about 3% right now on interest, which isn't anything. i'm a beginner who simply wants to know how to start.. from the basics. how to actually get set up, etc. step by step.

I like The Motley Fool Investment Guide as a primer on long term investment. It's cheap, not too long and pretty informative.

Ya read a lot. I second Motley or add investors.com

And remember there is a lot of uncertainty right now. Commodities are pricy. Gold and Oil weird. Be skeptical of everything. Diversify.

Another rec. for Motley Fool. Read everything you can.

I recommend Phil Town's "Rule #1" (I know he's not much better than an eBook salesmen, but the same strategies are taught in fund-management courses) and Burton Malkiel's "A Random Walk Down Wall Street." Between those two you should be able to find a strategy that suits your beliefs and level of commitment.

What would you guys say is the minimum amount of money you should have before you think about investing?

I don't know how this would work for non-Australians, but Australian banks are offering 8%+ on Internet savings accounts.

Or maybe check out Zimbabwe? You could become a billionaire overnight
