"Huckleberry Finn" to be censored. Not PC enough for today's kids

Revising history to make it look like it never happened is one of the stupidest things we can do.

yep. when the fuck are people going to realize the importance of context? sure, I'd say ban the book or parts of it if it were directly advocating the readers to start calling black people niggers, but it's not. sigh.

I wouldn't. Freedom of speech and the press. Just because you don't like it doesn't mean it should be banned. The KKK and Neonazis are retards but should be allowed to say what they want

They did the same stuff with the lady who wrote the books about Pippi Longstocking.. Her father was king a negro island when I was reading it growing up. Had a look on a new version at a friends place who had kids recently and now Pippis father is a king on southern pacific island instead ;)

Ridiculous in more ways than one. We are such a forgetful culture as it is...if this goes through, in 20 years no one will even remember it was ever changed/censored. Are we trying to simply make it appear that racism never existed?

Plus...as the almighty and all-knowing Jay-Z says, the word nigger only has power when we give it power, and put it on a fuckin pedestal.

This is so stupid. "We're merely updating a classic". It's a classic, it doesn't need updating, fuck you.

This. Why do we have to lose reminders of our history? What happened to learning from our history and how things have changed (or not changed as the case may be)

Howard Stern:
If you don't like it, turn it off.

If the book is too racy or does not translate well to today's coddled youth, then read another fucking book! Next thing you know, the Diary of Ann Frank was not taking place in occupied Holland and there will be no lesbian scene for our children to enjoy!

I read that book and the Adventures of Tom Sawyer numerous times when I was a kid. Even then I knew that even though it says it in the book I couldn't go around calling black people ni**ers.

: 40m ago It is NOT a coincidence that the people who are most eager to see the n-word left in books marketed to children are a Who's Who of the most racist commenters at USA Today. One reason the term should be replaced is to stop the cycle of adults passing racist behavior from one generation to the next. Yes, these people's children will still be taught bigotry at home. But, they will at least have the contrast of not having such beliefs affirmed at school. This will give them a fighting chance to be better people than their parents.

After years of considering such issues, I've concluded that people of color should have the greater or final say on such matters. We suffer the consequences, so it should be our call.

Fucking RAGE!

I believe the word should be changed because people in other countries dont have the education and the same ideas so the people could better understand because they are different.

Also people of dark skin should not be called that because they do not know our culture and i think they should all get laptops because it will help them learn.

thank you

New edition of 'Huckleberry Finn' loses the N-word -

Reading through the news article, I get the feeling that the real motivation behind this change was to restore/increase book sales to schools who were refusing to carry the book. So while "being sensitive" might be their explanation, I think it's really the cash that's speaking here.

Since I'm in Canada, the book wasn't part of my curriculum in school. In the USA, it's taught in high schools, right? If so, the average high school student has heard the n-word more times in 1 hour of hip-hop music than they would have read in the entire book - and my guess is that hip-hop is the most popular style of music in high schools. So, the change to the book has an almost zero impact on student's overall exposure to the word, and you could argue that hip-hop is actually helping reduce the true impact of the word because of the desensitivization that comes with overexposure.

I can't see how a scholar wouldn't see that, which leads me to think this is all sales driven.

"One of the great novels of all time is about to be neutered" for "today's politically correct, racially sensitive culture."
Removing the n'word from Huckleberry Finn will instantly remove much of what makes the novel so great. It may remove the very essence of the story. Huck Finn learns throughout the book that most of what he's been taught about blacks is not correct. He also learns that Jim, his friend and companion who happens to be black, is a man worthy of respect and admiration. He learns he's not at all like those with prejudices towards blacks have made him out to be.

Next on the Literary chopping block will be censoring Charlotte's Web and Catcher In The Rye. MARK MY WORDS

fucking retarded? sure. but look at the bright side: it's now acceptable to call black people "slave" instead of "nigger"

I kinda like slave better anyway. Gonna go out to dinner tonight and give it a go.

Couldn't have put it better myself. Catcher in the Rye is one of my all time favorite books too.
