Hi,

My friend and I are starting up an online business selling shoes. Not a huge business, but we are specializing in a cetain niche in the shoe market. We wanted to design our own website, but we are not sure what domain provider to go with and are unfamiliar with the whole process in general. The site is going to be fairly big I would say, so not sure if that matters. Any kind of help would be greatly appreciated. Please try and speak in as general language as possible also, as I will not understand hardly any abbreviations or technical jargon. Thanks in advance

You're going to start an online business yet you have absolutely no grasp on the technology or terminology behind it?

Good luck with all of that. :anon.sml:

I really love these type questions, you do realize that you asking a question that could not possibly be answerd in one post? Why dont you and your friend take the leap and then you ask questions along the way?

BTW, why is the sky blue?

HI there.

Yes, a lot of questions bundled up here.

As for the provider, get one that supports user scripts as some technical person (not you, obviously, we'll refer to him/her as Mr.Technical) might need to install a netshop of some sort.

Check with Mr.Technical for the hosting.

Get a shop script, open source whould be fine, again, check with Mr.Technical. Buying one is OK if Mr.Technical recommends it and it is not too expensive.

If you two are going to be Mr.Technical, you're in for a ride.

Hello,

For hosting get the basic package and the upgrade once the site gets bigger. I would use 1and1.com and paypal to see if you get sales first. Then I would upgrade to better hosting and a mechant account once a good amount of sales are made. Hope that helps

This may be not as good as having an online store but it's a start and should give you an idea whether or not you will be able to sell online.

Get Mr Technical to install Wordpress for you, and also get him to show you how Paypal works. Blog about your shoes every day and include your Paypal links.

Once you've made enough money, go and out speak to Mr Technical and get him to write a full blown e-commerce site for you

I think I know who this guy is. And if he is who I think he is, money isn't an issue right now.

Soledaddy, you post on 2+2?

Anyway, if it is you, you have the cash to pay a designer and a programmer to get the site set up for you.

The real challenge isn't going to be building the website, it's how well you market it after it's built.

Good luck man.

???

scott indeed i do post there.

How would I go about contacting a web designer and how does that process work? Do I just let them know what I want and he will do everything like I ask him? Im kind of shooting for perfection (in my eyes anyway) so everything I want done is specific. Should i already have a host in place before I contact him?

Also, if I want to add a product or remove something or even alter the site slightly in the future, do I need him to do it everytime? Will he give me the code so that I can do it? Thanks in advance everyone.

Just go to elance.com, or craigslist, or one of hundreds of places. Ask for a quote upfront. Explain how you want everything to work. You should probably ask for some kind of easy to use CMS, which you might have to learn if you don't want to have someone else updating your site for you.
