I've heard wack stories about this happening, but I finally got a notice. I normally only download from IPT, but occasionally I'll get something from TPB. And occasionally I forget to set my TPB torrents not to seed.

Anyways, a few mornings ago I was forced to click a link that said "I am aware of the issue and will take steps to resolve it." before I could get internet access back.

It even gave me the title of the torrent...it was for the movie Contraband. I enjoyed the humorous coincidence. A terrible movie, definitely not worth this little hassle.

It did not, however, give me any warnings about future violations or possible fines, etc.

Should be worried?

Use untraceable magnet links instead of torrents (pirate bay uses them? not sure). Don't use public torrent sites for newer movies.

As far as the fine possibility goes, you agreed with them that there is an issue and it's most likely documented now. I think if you don't do anything about it, you will probably get default fine or something. I suggest you contact whoever and dispute it. Put in at least minimal effort.

Month ago, one guy in my town got a notice from them as well. In croatia... How far does that hand stretch?

Buy a usenet subscription. Super fast speeds no worry about getting a letter from your ISP.

Supports SSL too so your isp won't easily be able to see what it is you're transferring.

news.astraweb.com - Usenet News Server - $10/month is a solid provider only $10 a month

Other option if you really like torrents is a VPN but your speeds will likely suffer.

Step 1) Create a fake torrent site and partner up with the big media companies
Step 2) Track and document all IPs for people who download the torrents
Step 3) Sell the data to the media companies so they can sue/fine them
Step 4) ???
Step 5) Profit!

2012 still downloading movies.

Where dey dew da at?

Wait you were downloading contraband and realized it was terrible only after watching. bro, they sent that notice to save you from yourself.

start taking estrogen pills now, life in prison is a lot easier if you're a sissy.

Hmmm....could be trouble.....

You should be FINE.

Just delete the damn file from your systems.

I've gotten several notices over the years and just deleted the files from my boxes.

I called my ISP and told them I deleted the files in question and aplogized. Then that was it.

Who needs a website when you can just scrape the swarm?

Why dont you people just turn on encrypt for all peer to peer connections from your torrent programs? And only accept encrypted connections? Then the cant scan or prove what you downloaded. Yeah, downloads maybe slow, but what by 5 mins? I can wait 5 mins for encrypted versions of files. Torrent programs have these options built in for a reason. Also use magnet links.... Am i in the noob sections?

I always got nervous about this so I never downloaded anything because I didn't have any knowledge on doing it the right way. What about streaming? Never heard about people getting in trouble for watching streamed movies.

I wish netflix had a bigger selection for xbox 360. I forget the whole process but I remember someone telling me that amazon or apple tv has a great selection of streaming movies or something. Or maybe it was a way to stream movies with their product ... idk I forget.

Aye!! Shiver me hard drives there Matey!! LOL

Hmmm.....maybe this is why I've only gotten 2 notices over the years.

"I" thought that anyone who uses a torrent client knows to turn encryption on. I go a step further and disable the legacy connections.

Note:* Allow incoming legacy connections allows BitTorrent Mainline to accept unencrypted incoming connections. If disabled, any incoming connection that is unencrypted will be ignored. It is recommended that you not disable this option unless your ISP actively searches for unencrypted incoming connections, as it can significantly impair your ability to connect to peers."

From µTorrent Connection Setup Guide - Videos & Guides - Help - µTorrent - a (very) tiny BitTorrent client

Enabling Protocol Encryption

Some ISPs (Internet Service Providers) actively interfere with P2P activities in order to reduce their bandwidth requirements. This causes µTorrent and other file sharing download speeds to become slow. To avoid this, µTorrent and other clients have introduced an encryption protocol to prevent ISPs from identifying BitTorrent traffic.

  • Go to Options > Preferences > BitTorrent. Set Outgoing under Protocol Encryption to Enable, check "Allow incoming legacy connections".
Some ISPs have extremely aggressive throttling methods and for those users it might be necessary to set outgoing to Forced; however this will greatly reduce the number of peers you can connect to. Enabled is sufficient for most users.

Then "I":

1.) Turn off DHT

2.) Turn off Local Peer Discovery

3.) Turn off Peer Exchange

4.) Turn ON ask tracker for scrape information.

Another thing I do is UNCHECK the "Randomize port each start" and then change the incoming port to something ABOVE 53,000. It may be a myth, but I've read in several places that ISP's kinda FLAG port activity between 51,000 and 53,000.

You really don't have to do all of that, but I've experimented over the years to get everything down to the least amount of "noise" while active.

This is all I've done for the last 8 years and I have 3 boxes that I seed from almost constantly.

No PeerBlock, Proxy, SSH Tunnel with a VPN service or anything, and I don't screw with my IP's.

But, I also ONLY use PRIVATE TRACKERS!!! I've gone to TPB on occasion, but I used a VM to connect. (I hear they have HERPES so I used a Cyber Condom. lol) The same with h33t.com when I've gone there. I don't really consider Demonoid a "private" tracker BTW.

One more thing, in the last year I have QUIT messing with CAMS & SCREENERS. The people I've seen getting notices lately are for these and movies & music that's been out for less than 6 months. Even though I'm on private trackers I decided to leave anything less than a year old in the Movie & Music category alone.

I just found this site recently Torrent Invites - Get your free bittorrent tracker invitations! and it may be a resource for some of you to get into private trackers. I dunno, I haven't had time to really be active there and know how good it is or isn't. But it's free to join and has open registrations.

PeerBlock

You're fine, unless they want to make an example out of somebody. Then they've got you on the list. But the chances of that happening is comparable to getting a BJ from Cameron Diaz.

Usually you can throw these messages in the trash. I know people who get popped with 2-3 a month and keep warezing. BUT I'm not in the USA. So I don't know.

And yes, Usenet, Rapidshare etc. Shits faster than torrents anyway. Torrents are too public. I've been hit with a copyright infringement notice as well 2-3 years ago for a really shit movie I forget the name of. Disregarded and never heard anything since.

Private trackers doesn't guarantee anonymity either. You think WB don't know how to acquire an invite? But yes, it cuts the risk a LOT. Like almost 99% frum my kalukulationz.
