Ok, so some of you already know bout the landlord issue I posted a while back. I have such a headache right now its like I got kicked by the Drama Llama.

I moved down here to Georgia the first week of march to be with my grandparents (granddad 84, grandma 75), they had a room, and I figured I could try to get a fresh start down here in Georgia, that way I could get my new GA license, get a car, get everything situated then find a separate place so that my wife/kids can follow me down here in the fall (ie: to get out of michigan). (I do most of my income via web development and hosting, so my geographic location isn't so important as long as I have internet, but wife and I decided we needed to get out of michigan.)

Well in the time I was down here, it was mostly find, my grandmother liked having me down here and all, I help her out with various things. Some simple stuff even such as going into the grocery store with her so I can help her find things or read off prices for her.

She also had surgery on her right eye for cateracts, so she wasn't supposed to bend over for a while so I was helping her with some stuff. Well due to the way she was conditioned as a housewife she was right back to work for my granddad within hours of getting home from the hospital. Which course meant the lens they put in her eye slipped around to the back of her eye, so she had to go back end to have the lens 'stitched' to her iris (she had a couple stitches removed lil over a week ago).

And course you know I did finally get my driver's license, its a temporary paper til my permanent one comes in the mail and I already got a new checking and savings account setup and just putting away some money into savings until fall and so forth. Course my granddad (who despite the number of times he almost killed someone on the road in the month I been here...) won't let me drive his van because he doesn't think the temporary license is a real license cuz back when he got his he just got it on the spot.

But then few days back she had a blood pressure of 225, all I know is that she wanted granddad, didn't sound urgent just sounded like maybe she needed help getting into her nighties so I didn't think much of it and didn't want to pop my head in while the both of them were in there to spare some embarrassment. So course I'm typing away and I notice paramedics walking into her room with a cart and thinking wtf is going on? So I didn't find out from my granddad until AFTER an ambulance showed up that she was having problems and such.

Later at the hospital they determined that she had a stroke, so they kept her overnight, she then had another stroke which then paralyzed half her body. And course my granddad here with me is in panic mode and such saying they're gona have to find assisted living and I'd have to leave and all that. Then course my dad called getting more information about it saying that my granddad is exaggerating and so forth, cuz its gona take them least a year to get into an assisted living community and that my grandmother wanted me there to help. Course I was already hitting up friend/family I knew in Missouri or Wisconsin if things came to worse.

So I hear she's doing a little better, but they don't want to release her back home unless they got someone there for least the first month of recovery that could lift her and what not, as a result I hear my uncle bob is driving in, taking a month off from his work (he's a police officer, pretty big guy) to come and help out. Course upon hearing this my granddad goes back into panic mode calling up my Aunt Mary, who works for United Airlines to get me a ticket out of here tommorrow, thinking wow sudden... I mean I could sleep on the couch for a month if Bob is only gona be here for that period of time but... wow.

So a little back and forth trying to figure out how to get me back up to Grand Rapids, Mi, since United only flies into Chicago or Detroit, and course my mom who lives in GR can't drive that far, and my wife's truck is broke down (she could either try to get it fixed for something like 200$, or get a used car for 300$ but we don't have the money for that right now), But course I got mary's number and forwarded it to my dad and course they talked, and I guess my dad called back my granddad chewing him out (or as my granddad put it "tore" into him).

And so course my granddad bitching to me bout how my dad "tore" into him about this and that, and that I'd be leaving tomorrow, and that it wasn't his decision for me to come down here anyways but rather my grandmother's and yada yada. Course I know with him he automatically goes into panic mode and thinks of all the worst case scenarios and so on. So then course I later get a text from my mom saying that I'm not going anywhere, that my dad will talk to bob tonight when he arrives and to tell granddad they said so (I guess mainly cuz my grandma getting upset that he would try to get me out of here). And course I don't have everyone's numbers so I'm playing a lot of phone tags and what not, and I usually have to get info bout my grandmother from my local aunt rachel who has been stopping in by her.

So... right now I'm mostly packed up, not sure exactly which way it's gona go, and personally I wouldn't mind staying with someone in Atlanta for a couple days to a week til things calmed down. I imagine it's hard for him because he's never been without his wife for something like 50 years, and he hasn't seen me in over 12 years so I get the feeling its like he doesn't really "know" me. Which I can't really blame him for, just kinda hoping things will calm down a bit when his son Bob shows up , maybe having a more familiar face around will help calm him.

So yea, mostly packed, not sure if I should leave it packed, and feeling like the Drama Llama kicked me square in the forehead. And course my grandparents still gota deal with figuring out where they're gona go after next month (assuming my grandmother even gets out of the hospital by then)...

Got $385 and just need a place for the week?

Atlanta vacation apartment rental - Buckhead-Midtown: Newly Renovated Serviced Studio Apartment - Best Location

Edit: sorry, I just skimmed the first time and didn't see that money was tight. Still, if you look around you may find a better deal out in Gwinnett County or South Atlanta...look OTP.

LoL yea, a week or so ago (its already friday didn't even notice) I'd have that easy, but I sent most of my money to my wife already.

There's also those motels out on 78 that rent out to traveling business people and construction workers that are, like $179 a week or something. I know I've seen the signs. But damn, you have no wheels and money is tight. I dunno, dude. If I was in town, I'd at least give you a lift to where you need to be but I'm out of town until May.

I'd give a lot to take a room at my grandparent's house. They're so badass & we get along so well. They would actually be good for my productivity. My generation (thirtysomethings) relates more to theirs than our parents IMO.

You've got young kids though ... WTF are you thinking being away for more than a week?

The major difficulty in getting out of a state to establish somewhere else is actually getting out of the state. I figured if I could get out of michigan, get everything ready in Georgia the rest of the family could follow (as posted). It'd be much harder if I was trying to find a place and such in GA, while still in Michigan. What made it easy was it was a free plane ticket to GA.

May not be of much use to you right this second, but maybe in the future when you get everything ironed out but there are developments in Lawrenceville (just up 316) with 40+ brand new homes sitting in them with only two or three occupied. Has been that way for over a year. Nice homes, too; 4 to 5 bedrooms going for pennies (relatively speaking). The area is really nice and the only reason I haven't scooped one up yet is because I like being ITP.

If you're not ready to buy yet, its very much a renter's market. Atlanta wasn't hit nearly as hard with foreclosures as many other parts of the country. If you want to be ITP, then search CL with the words "emory" in the title. Anywhere near there should be pretty nice and relatively cheap. If you don't mind being OTP then anywhere around Roswell, Dunwoody, etc. area should have some good deals. Good deals = 3, 4 br house for ~$1,000/mo.

damn, that really sucks karl. best wishes, dude. congratulations on getting out of michigan -- it's not easy to do, i know (my move was pretty wraught with drama, albeit nothing compared to yours), but you'll be so much better off when it's all over and done with :)

I think they meant me.

Yep.

Get back to your wife and kids. ASAP. When you get back, since you want to leave the state, figure out a way to do it together.

Your grandparents have all sorts of family to help them out, even if they all have to stretch to make it happen. Your responsibility is first to your own household.
