After reversing its 2007 decision to avoid an .xxx suffix for porn sites, the Internet Corp. for Assigned Names and Numbers approved the distinction in a 9-3 vote — with four abstentions — of the board that went against the ICANN Government Advisory Committee's advice.

Wired reports the adult industry and free speech advocates both oppose the development, which they feel could lead the way to easier censorship online. The suffix is not required, and adult sites will need to pay to secure additional URLs from ICM Registry to protect their online brands.

I dont see how or why this even passed. No one in adult industry wants this. ICANN just wants to get more money from all of us adult guys so we have to buy the .xxx of our niche/site as to protect it.

lame

There is around 300 000 domains already pre-ordered and each will cost around 50-60$, so calculate how much ICANN will earn.

This is the only reason why such domains will go live. There is no benefit for this kind of extension but who cares if you can profit from it? :D
