So I am running a ecig offer on one of my traffic sources and I only ran it via Geoloc on states with the highest amount of cigarette smokers. It varies from around 16% to as high as 27%. As soon as I set this though, my CTR rose but not where it should be if one had to guess from statistics.
I looked into what kind of people smoke and apparently cigarette smokers are typically less educated. While searching I also found this article from Chitika.
I then targeted states that are also less college educated and cut out ones that have decent smoking populations but higher college degrees. I also switched out some websites and ran on some websites that I thought appealed to the less sophisticated more.
BAM, more than double the CTR and a nice decrease in ad spend and thus more profits. Goes to show, while split testing is great, some critical thinking about what your audience is like and some large scale statistics can be veeery useful, so its not all just a guessing game.
