For anyone here that runs a business and has to print up/send invoices, do you have an invoice sample or template that I could use for my web design company?

Im just looking for something fairly simple and nice looking, im just too lazy to make one in Word...

Oh, and since im on a Mac(Computer at work), I cant download the ones off Microsofts site (Cant open a .Cab)

Ugh, I really gotta get a business license too....

Dave, how do you handle taxes? I mean, if a client is obviously going to write it off as a business expense, I have to claim that as income correct?

business license is easy and cheap in California, bigger expenses and questions become incorporating and in what state and the tax issues with that.
Go and get a starting a business book from Nolo press they come with forms and a cd with pdf files of the forms.
And most likely the city where you live should have a site like this one:City of Fremont - Starting a Business

Lazy,

Do you want the short & sweet?

Step 1 - File a fictitious business name statement with your county. Cost for me in OC was like $28.

Step 2 - Submit your fict. biz to your local newspaper. Cost about $55.

Step 3 - Take your fict biz statement to your bank, open a new acct (I opened a biz acct with wells fargo - no minimums, no fees)

Step 4 - Open a biz savings acct and deposit about 25% of all your earnings in to it. That is a rough estimate of your taxes. If you want to be really safe, deposit 30%.

Step 5 - Every quarter, pay a CPA about $200 to submit your taxes, or do them your own.

Step 6 - Become filthy stinking rich and take Dave out to a lobster dinner for his wisdom :D

Exactly what I wanted Dave....

I just contacted City hall and they said business license was $70 a year. She said that I would also have to take forms around to other departments to find out if there was any other pre-requisites or other hoops to jump through. I just gotta get there before they close sometime so I can pick up the paperwork...

My mom actually just got a business license and said the most expensive thing was the newspaper ad...

Dave, next time your up my way (SF Bay area) ill buy ya some drinks (Ill have to wait outside the bar though, me != 21)

I was gonna come down to SF for Ad:tech but I couldnt get off work (I hate this place)

Heh, no worries Lazy. I wish I knew what I know now when I was your age. Setting up a DBA and a biz is very easy in CA, and helps legitimize your business. Beware tho - don't include your business phone number with your DBA (fict name statement) or else you'll be getting 8 phone calls a day trying to sell you merchant services!

Im sure I have to provide some kind of phone number on the statement correct? I plan on using my pesonal cell phone as my business line, however, I may have to put up for a 2nd land line at my house for a business line if worst comes to worst

I'd recommend looking into at least picking up a skype ## (or insert cheap phone service here) and using that for business. When it comes time to do your taxes you can always claim the business line as an expense. When your splitting your personal line with the business you might have to claim a percentage of your bill that was actual business use.

If you keep business expenses and personal expenses as separate as possible, it'll save you a hell of a headache when it comes time to file taxes.

sorry if this is retarded i didn't actually read any of the responses.

Staples, office max, office depot all sell invoice templates that come in pads you can carry around.

drooling, good point, I may consider getting Skype, ill have to look into it, I think I used it once way back and never with a phone line, just chatting to other users....

Damn, after looking at the cost of a seperate phone line, its like $10 a month, Skype is only $32 or some shit a year...

Im wondering though, if its worth it to get Skype Voicemail or calling in features....Anyone?

This is probably going to sound like a dumb question, but how do you pay yourself? Do you treat yourself like an employee, or instance, say I had $1000 in my business checking and I wrote myself a check for $200 from my business checking and deposited it into my personal checking. How do taxes work on something like that? What do you put that under in terms of accounting? Payroll?

If you're just a sole proprietor (the simplest form of business) then it really doesn't matter, all profits pass through to your tax return on Schedule C. You are not an employee, it is not payroll. You pay taxes either at the end of the year when you file your return, or if you make even a reasonable amount of cash, you file a quarterly estimated payment.

If you're making any real money and actually care, just hire a CPA. They'll pay for themselves in no time and save you the headache...

For the phone number question:

If you needed to put something down as a phone number, you could get a free local-number voicemail at Privatephone. (I'd post the link, but then this message would never show up.) It's dot com.
