Rand fishkin recently wrote a post talking about how people react to posts about webspam - specifically outing. He mentioned in a tweet earlier that polling showed that only 11% of people said "shun those who out", 15% said "its ok but only if they are major websites", and 67% said we should be totally open about this sort of thing.

I mentioned that his particular audience may be skewing his polling results. What are your thoughts? Vote.

dude snitches get stitches for real.

I Do agree somewhat with "Outing OK for big sites" though.
If its a huge multinational corp fuck them.
However if smaller guys had already discovered the techniques and were using them to their benefit, they too would get fucked if you outed the big guy.

Actually, Sticking with original, snitches get stitches.

Nothing worse than when someone outs your niches. That's a lesson you learn the hard way, hopefully in your early IM days.

you don't need to out someone to explain how they did what they did. Look at Eli's blog (bluehatseo.com) he never outted anything but gave away more aggressive tips than basically any other blog out there

True. I think the discussion is more about whether it's acceptable to out a website if they are using webspam to rank. Rand argues that it's acceptable.

I think the argument is pretty pointless, because Google doesn't have the resources to handle the amount of webspam complaints that would come in if everyone started reporting webspam.

The Prohibition is a great analogy. Alcohol was technically illegal but everyone was drinking and there wasn't enough resources to combat it.

I'd like Rand to out all of his convention buddies who buy links for their corporate clients.

Being a snitch is bad for business.

I agree with the i'm fuckinf wasted part. And rand's highly groomed facial hair is super gay. Gay gay gay.

True that, but no matter how hard you try when you post something you're going to out someone somewhere, and sometimes those people will get pissed about it. I always tried to use the most obscure examples I could think of and I still got approached by people saying i outed them and some are cool about it, others get butt hurt to no end.

When i wrote my guide to getting started in Ecommerce I used selling kites online as my example. Literally the most obscure thing I could think of...Yep I got an email from one of my readers that I outted his ecommerce niche. He was cool about it, but it shows the inevitability.
