People don't want to be packed like sardines inside a train, they want to drive their own cars. But that can't be allowed. Drive up the price of fuel, decrease the energy supply, force Americans to use public transit and make them more dependent on the government.
And of course build an infrastructure that could be used for all sorts of nefarious purposes.
The majority of people living in China, Japan, Spain, South Korea, Germany, Belgium, U.K., Italy, France, Turkey, the Netherlands, etc would probably take this time to point out to you that their high speed rails have pretty much brought nothing but HUGE individual/collective benefits for a variety of reasons.
Interesting point of view though. Where can I find all these people in these developed nations that are complaining about their high speed rails? Saying things like "we don't want to be packed like sardines into these trains?!!!! If we use the train system for its efficiency, there is no way IN HELL we could still enjoy driving our car with the top down in the countryside on the weekends!"
Pretty sure the developed nations utilizing high speed rail are not forcing their citizens to use their systems. In fact, I'd say that citizens are forced to use the high speed rails because of the sheer inefficiency of relying soley and/or primarily on roadways and cars in the year 2011 with nearly 7 billion people populating this planet. If that is not the "free market" at work, I'm not sure what is. I don't know though, maybe we should ask people on this forum that live in some of these countries...seriously I'd be curious.
For those of you in countries with a very active rail system....is it seen as a blessing for the society or is it seen as more along the lines of a curse, as suggested by hellblazer here?
