just read Markus' message he sent to all members on POF, and I thought to myself: does this guy know that everyone is getting laid off POF and most of us on the first date? is he giving in to the hypocrisy of his female members who are acting all high class when in reality they too want to get laid?

let's be honest, a woman that wants a serious relationship/marriage would probably go on a site like eHarmony or match.com where men actually have to pay.. POF has always been known to be a place to get laid.. what do you guys think? is Markus taking his shit a little too seriously?

for those that dont have POF, here's his beauty of a message full of arrogance and dictatorship (aka I will delete you if you mention the word sex... jeez man, chill out) :

My name is Markus and I created POF/Plentyoffish. When I created POF, I wanted it to be all about finding relationships with the right person. For the first 7 years this worked really well, I got the site to 10 million users without any employees people and POF was generating a ton of relationships. Around 3 years ago, everyone started using the website via mobile phones. Today about 70% of POF use is via a mobile phone and unfortunately about 2% of men started to use POF as more of a hookup site mostly due the the casual nature of cell phone use.

In sticking with my vision that POF is all about Relationships, I'm going to make a bunch of changes to ensure it stays a relationship-focused site.

1. Any first contact between users that contains sexual references will not be sent. Anyone who tries to get around this rule will be deleted without warning. This rule has actually been in effect since last month and it's made the site so much better.

2. You can only contact people +/- 14 years of your age. There is no reason for a 50 year old man to contact a 18 year old women. The majority of messages sent outside those age ranges are all about hookups. Anyone who tries to get around this rule will get deleted.

3. Intimate Encounters will go away in the next few months. There are 3.3 Million people who use the site every day, of those there are only 6,041 single women looking for Intimate Encounters. Of those 6,041 women, the ones with hot pictures are mostly men pretending to be women. Intimate Encounters on POF can be summed up as a bunch of horny men talking to a bunch of horny men pretending to be women.

In short the vast majority of people will not be impacted. This is because the vast majority of people are not going around spamming women saying "let's have sex tonight". I can't change POF alone, I need your help to get the word out there that POF is all about relationships!

Funny because that's about the gist of it too.

The women you see on there with their high class profiles saying that they aren't a slut
and not out to be a booty call are usually the first ones you see in the bar parking lots
giving blowjobs to the guy they just met at a POF hosted singles party.

For a guy that runs one of the largest dating sites, he has a complete lack of understanding of it's users.

I am assuming and I could be wrong, someone sued them and took legal action so they had to throw down some rules, I could be wrong.

I think it is fine. He has to make the women feel comfortable to visit the site. If pretty women get chased off by old dudes bothering them with let's have sex tonight messages, then there will be no guys. If there are tons of women, no matter what the messages put out to discourage men, there will be tons of men. Women don't go to a site thinking; 'oh there are tons of lonely men there, I'll sign up'. Men do think that way.

Seems simple to me.

I love the righteous indignation in these two threads. POF knew exactly what they were doing with this and it makes perfect sense. Young attractive women are the lifeblood of a dating site like POF, and while you assume everyone on their wants sex most these girls can get propositioned 20 times a night at the bar if they wanted, it really isn't why most of the genuinely hot ones are on there. Plus when you get genuinely attractive women on there it brings successful men with social skills and it all grows from there and soon enough... Boom! you're got a whole fucking ecosystem of dating.

I don't think people realize just how much sex spam women get on these sites. Back when I did dating ad campaigns I asked some of my female friends who've been on there, and I was baffled how many creepy messages they get. It's literally hundreds a day in some cases! And these aren't all 10s were talking about here. One in particular was an offensive lineman of a woman, and if you've resorted to messaging her on the internet for sex your penis has fallen on some truly sad times.

There really isn't a downside here. As a marketer, you should be thrilled that all your younger women/sugar daddy/sugar momma campaigns suddenly got a great new selling proposition. As a human being dating on there, now your message will have slightly less spam to filter through now that there are less creepy old guys drying out and psychologically sealing all the vaginas with their clumsy propositions.

congratulations, you just described 90% of online dating sites.

POF's competitive advantage was precisely that you could easily find a one night stand.. POF had no fucking long ass profiles where people have to be witty and talk about their astrological sign and bullshit like that.. it was a site where young college guys/girls could easily find someone to hang out with for a night with no commitment.. you know how many times I heard guys in bars saying to other single guys "yo you should try POF it's the best site to get laid".. the word of mouth was powerful just because of that. No other site had that. That's how I heard about it a couple years ago and that's why I signed up. Now POF is on its path to be just like every other site: okcupid, mingle, zoosk, match, etc..

Great way to grow a site, ya think?

And now that POF is one of the biggest dating sites in the world, they're probably just trying to "clean up" their image a little to better appeal to potential partners, investors, acquirers, etc.

I think this is called marketing, or something like that ...

And this changes that how exactly? The no sex rule applies to initial messages. If you can't make it through at least a brief introduction or compliment before going straight to asking to have sex then you're either failing miserably or going after some extremely questionable women. I honestly think if I were sending out 'hey want to have sex tonight' opening messages that 'yes' would be the most terrifying response possible. Spoiler Alert: Her photos aren't real and the exotic STDs and severe anal trauma 'she' leaves you with are going to haunt you are you doctors for decades.

they're probably just trying to "clean up" their image a little to better appeal to potential partners, investors, acquirers, etc.

Then they probably shouldn't make blanket moral statements like "There is no reason for a 50 year old man to contact a 18 year old women."

Gay relationships are also rare compared to the general public, but it wouldn't be a good PR move to say that there is no reason for a man to contact a man.

If 5 percent of the public is gay, that might be the same percent of 18 year olds that would consider dating a 50 year old.

Another thing is that there are currently options to indicate that you are married and a frequent drug user. So apparently a 32 year old married drug user can contact an 18 year old, but the single and clean 33 year old cannot.

It's really pathetic that some of you morons consider yourself marketers, but don't understand why POF made this move. Media buyers are rejoicing right now!

This sucks. You know how long it took me to make 6,041 POF profiles. Thanks Markus, that was all for naught apparently.
