Hi guys,

What if you find a book that is, say, 200 pages and use that to create a new book? Let's say that you change the table of contents around a bit, and you write the content from scratch (not just "rewrite" each sentence). But let's say you only include the meat and cut out 100 pages of fluff - leaving you with a 100-page book.

Is this copyright infringement? Yes, or no and why? I would appreciate it if people who post are actually fairly confident about the answer they give - and not just post to increase their post count or "sound cool." :xomunch:

Thanks!

Are you serious? I would suggest speaking with a lawyer, but I doubt you will. Have fun with your Clickbank or WSO products and GTFO!

Oddly enough I just had a seminar on copyright with an intellectual property lawyer. Anyway, it sounds like you are trying to produce a derivative work. If you simply take an existing work and condense or abridge it, you are probably violating copyright. The fact that you are taking the general structure and content of the original work indicates to me that you are not producing original material merely based on an idea. You should really speak to a competent IP lawyer to know for certain. My advice is worth what you paid for it. But honestly, if you have to ask, you should probably save your money and err on the side of caution.

Is that book generating income for someone?
Is your rewrite going to restrict their ability to profit from their book in any way?

If thats a yes, its infringement.

License it and pay a royalty fee.
