I'd like to think anyways...

I often see nice pretty layouts that give the surfer plenty of information and entice them to click on the ads with pictures.

When surfers can't find the info they are looking for easily and get frustrated most click through instead of hitting back. And those who hit back usually don't get far :1bluewinky: So if you can get nice relevant ads while maintaining a purposely messy site that encourages them to seek information elsewhere. CTR goes up.

I've reached this conclusion through observation of a clients site. It's a text message site and the CAPTCHA is extremely difficult to read. The CTR on the ad placed next to it is through the roof.

Was this obvious? Am I a moron?

you may have a point, all this web 2.0 design is good for us, "power" users however the average internet surfer is used to the same look and feel of 1998 web designs

I do think this is true, the ugliest simplest site i have has the highest CTR, i had one with the same stuff on it that was really pretty and it was like 1/5 of the CTR go figure
