Yeah, I had been following it on tv and digg. Crazy that they didn't start the search earlier. I'm glad his family is ok, and he couldn't have had a more honorable death.

Did they ever figure out why he walked away from the road?

Pretty sad, I feel bad for the wife and kids.

It sounds like he may have got disoriented. Possibly hypothermia.

He did what any father / husband would have done. He made sure his family was as safe as possible under the conditions, then went for help.

God bless you James Kim. We'll all miss you.

Being a digital audio geek, I always enjoyed James’ reviews. His videos were always interesting and informative. It's clear he spent a good amount of time using every tech gadget he reviewed in real world situations.

It's tragic that he was put into such a hardcore situation. I wish the best for his family.

Followed that on digg for a while...I had high hopes when they found his family. :(

What really would have sucked would have been if next week his review would have been a PLB. That review could have saved his life!!!

I believe his thoughts were that the canyon would lead him down to the Rogue River and the nearest main road. I guess they had been studying a map and estimated the distance to the nearest town to be only 4 miles away but it was really 15 miles. He had hiked some 10 miles from the car but was headed the wrong way anyway. The Cascade Mtn range is a very rugged and dangerous place. You don't stand much of a chance hiking around in the snow for days without the proper equipment/compass in that area.

I can't imagine what he went through. They always say to stay put if you are lost but after spending 7 days in the car with his family and still no help had arrived and you have a 7-month old baby -- I can understand why he felt like it was his only option to take a chance and leave the car to seek help.

Very sad story. At least his family made it out safely. I'm sure that is all he wanted.

I just read today that the family had just started to walk out when they were found. They got lucky.

Sad story.
