Well.. I've done some digging through the forums and Google.

Besides Adwords Editor, there is no keyword grouping tool.

I think there is a real need for a tool that, when given a list of random keywords, attempts to break them into campaigns and adgroups.

For example:
free verizon ringtones
free verizon ringtones nelly
free verizon realtones
free verizon real tones
free cingular ringtones
cheap cingular ringtones
cheap cingular ringtones britney
cheap cingular real tones
cheap verizon ringtones

Yields this structure:
Verizon (Campaign)
  • Free Verizon Ringtones (Adgroup)
    • free verizon ringtones
    • free verizon ringtones nelly
  • Free Verizon Realtones (Adgroup)
    • free verizon realtones
  • Free Verizon Real Tones (Adgroup)
    • free verizon real tones
  • Cheap Verizon Ringtones (Adgroup)
    • cheap verizon ringtones
Cingular (Campaign)
  • Free Cingular Ringtones (Adgroup)
    • free cingualr ringtones
  • Cheap Cingular Ringtones
    • cheap cingular ringtones
    • cheap cingular ringtones britney
  • Cheap Cingular Real Tones
    • cheap cingular real tones
I realize that this may be a hard thing to do, because there are so many ways to break kws into campaigns / groups. Like I could have broken it into Free / Cheap campaigns, and then cingular and verizon adgroups.

Adwords Editor does an OK job of identifying a few similarities, but just sucks overall. I know this is a very hard thing to do, algorithmically. Does anyone have any scripts they want to share, or tools / programs they use for this? Or maybe just your thoughts on the best way to systematically break up the kws.... I attempted a little script in php, but it was sick like O(n^3) or something.

Your thoughts?

Maybe something very dynamic, with AJAX, to allow dragging and dropping of campaigns / adgroups which would update on the backend... I can see something like this being extremely powerful for us PPC guys.

PM'd you.

I'm still interested in anyone's thoughts. I'm sure the majority of you just look for common themes and do it by hand, but it would speed up things tremendously in the beginning of a new campaign to have such a tool.

Yeah, I'm trying to find a quality keyword grouper as well. For now I use Keyword Radar's keyword grouper. It works alright but if you search really broad terms it doesnt work that well.
