Keyword Tool - Search Volume Accuracy

Today Google decided to rank me #4 for a an obscure kw that their tool says has 140 exact match and 590 broad match searches per month.

At the #4 spot I received 305 visitors today. My maths isn't that good but....

This is my first half-way serious SEO site so I'm pretty new to this, but is the keyword tool usually off by an order of magnitude?

Yeah pretty much. I've found it to be decent at giving a relative scale within a niche but not accurate at predicting exact number of monthly searches.

You got lucky that the real results are > than the tool states. Sometimes it goes the other way.
