Apparently the American justice system is so busy covering for trigger happy police officers that they've decided it's perfectly acceptable to hand out a sentence of probation for teenagers who kill 4 people.

Ethan Couch, a 16 year-old, killed 4 people when he decided it was a good idea to take to Valium, drink until his blood alcohol was three times the legal limit, and then go for a cruise in daddy's pickup.

He admitted to the 4 charges of intoxicated manslaughter. His lawyer argued that his parents were responsible for his actions because they raised him to believe, to paraphrase, "there are no rules for people who have wealth."

What in the ever loving fuck. This asshole doesn't have to do any jail time, but we'll lock people up for multiple years just for getting busted with drugs a couple of times. Fuck this.

Full disclosure:

There was a time in my life when I was raging alcoholic. I drove drunk alot. I also got caught numerous times. Luckily I was never in an accident or injured anyone. I was also an asshole.

For my assholery I'll probably never drive again ( I deserve that). I have a felony conviction on my permanent record and it cost me a promising career that I spent an enormous amount of money preparing for. I also spent time in jail. And then did 3 years of probation after I got out for the last one.

I'm fine with all of that. But this fucking kid killed 4 people and gets probation? And he gets it because mommy and daddy didn't teach him that killing people has consequences. What fucking planet do I live on because I'm pretty sure that I got lost on my way home tonight.

Sounds like Thailand. The son of the owner of Red Bull (yes, Red Bull's owner is Thai) killed a cop while drinking and driving. Somehow never even got a slap on the wrist.

"there are no rules for people who have wealth."

Soooo, basically the judge got a nod from the dad in the back, the kid's off and the judge will be retired in Jamaica by year's end.

We're not corrupt.

It gets better. One can bomb civilians multiple times, become president of South Africa, do some more oppressing, and most of the world will mourn you.

You surprised? This is America. If you're rich (or you work for the gov), you're allowed to do anything you want.

Mass murder? Lol no big deal, just do a few hours of community service.

The war on drugs isn't
It is a war on the lower classes and minorities.

at least the kids parents are gonna get drained of assets, gettin kicked out of the country club is prolly worse than prison

and why would you deserve any of that? youre just mad you got more for less.

Why would I deserve any of that? Because when I voluntarily chose to apply for a driver's license I entered into a contract agreeing that I wouldn't engage in certain behaviors. I engaged in those behaviors, got caught, and subsequently had to deal with the fallout.

This is pretty basic contract law. I entered into a contract of my own volition and violated the agreements of said contract knowing full well what the penalties were. The fact that the contract was with a government entity instead of a private entity is inconsequential because it was a contract that I had the option of entering into or not entering into. That's why I deserved any and all of that.

As to me being mad that I got more for less. Perplexed... mildly disgusted... sure. Mad... not so much. I'm good with what i got. It was expensive and embarrassing. It also forced me into living a life that I'm ultimately happier with and a career that I find more rewarding and have more control over, even if it wasn't the career I envisioned having 10 years ago. Not being able to drive sucks, but I'm a hell of a lot healthier now that I walk or bike for most of my local trips. Not being able to drive really hasn't had that big of an impact on my life since I live right next to a major railway. Getting to just about anywhere in the world is still as simple as going a few blocks to the train depot and riding to the city or airport I need to get to.

At some point I'l re-apply for and get my license back, but most likely I won't bother with jumping through those hoops until walking becomes more difficult than it is enjoyable. So I figure I've got at least another 30 years before that happens.

My issue is that his actions were the direct cause of the death of 4 people and his consequences are limited to nothing more than 10 years of felony probation most, if not all, of which is likely to be unsupervised. Which anyone who's ever been on unsupervised probation knows is a complete joke. I'm more pissed that this judge reinforced the kids belief that the rules don't apply to him.

But thanks, I was anticipating the U MAD BRO reply. Gotta admit, it took a little longer than I thought it would though.

Being rich is awesome; being rich enough to have laws bend to your will is even better; being so rich that you have groups of people actively changing laws to further your lifestyle and longevity of wealth is best.

Having friends like Couch when you're a teenager is highly recommended. Rich, no rules, party all the time. You win by getting through it without killing anyone.

Btw, if wealth couldn't buy privilege then wealth wouldn't mean much. It's been like this everywhere since ancient Rome.
