Kiva & Microlending

Also interested. Although I have researched some "teams" before that have -25% to 3 percent returns... errr... sounds more like a gamble to me.

I was just looking at bryn's page. (lost the link) Aren't all the loans funded at the moment?

I just saw there were no loans available the other day - first time I have seen that. I would say that it pretty impressive of Kiva.

You guys know your money doesn't actually go directly to these people, right? - http://www.nytimes.com/2009/11/09/business/global/09kiva.html?_r=1&scp=1&sq=kiva&st=cse

Even though the money directly go to the person you select its still going to someone who needs it. Plus I read this:

Just today, for example, Kiva listed a loan for Phong Mut in Cambodia and at this writing only $25 of the needed $800 has been raised. But you needn’t worry about whether Phong Mut will get the loan because it was disbursed last month. And if she defaults, you might not hear about it: the intermediating microlender MAXIMA might cover for her in order to keep its Kiva-listed repayment rate high.
So that's nice.

Screw that, why not give out microloans and make money as well. Prosper.com

Look at the historical ROIs of some of the largest lenders on Prosper and come back.

yes the shit is backfilled, yes a microfinance institute, which is making like 20-30% on these loans might cover a default. So what? If there isnt capital available (or anticipated to be available), these people don't get their loans. God damn.

edit: and if that person doesn't pay it back, most of time the microfinance isn't going to cover it, and so the lender is screwed. That's pretty "person-to-person" to me.

This is dumb, if you want to lend money. Hook up with a real estate attorney in your area. They always have clients looking for money. You can lend at 12-18% and have something secured by property in the United States.

Remember, people love borrowing money. No one wants to pay back. Being a money lender is a tough racket.

Here's my page: https://www.kiva.org/lender/andrew2186

I just started reading that article, will post my thoughts after I'm done.

I've always been interested in P2P lending, and just started with Lending Club. Been with Kiva for a while. If we have a WF team let me know.

Repayment has been surprising - close to 99% last time I checked.

How come you have so many repaid, and Youngbutt does not?
