I am trying to get started in the affiliate marketing thing, and just set up a landing page using wordpress:

Free Trial at GameFly

Is this a good start? I wanted to get some feedback before I started dumping money into PPC.

It's not bad, but imho, its not great either. Its very informational, it tells me everything I need to know about it, but it doesn't make me want to take out my credit card.

Gamefly is similar enough to netflix or blockbuster that you could use google/quantcast/compete/alexa to find some good pages promoting those programs and copy the techniques they use.

And get a good call to action in there. "What are you waiting for, Sign Up today" doesnt work if there isnt some type of time bound factor at play. If you're going to take that approach try something like;
"We've partnered with Gamefly to offer new users a one time, 10 day free trial this weekend! If you register for Gamefly before midnight Sunday night you can get the games of your choice delivered right to your door at no charge. You've got nothing to lose except your own boredom. What are you waiting for, SIGN UP NOW!"

You'll likely lose your ass promoting gamefly, unless you get it confirm that they'll also payout if someone signs up for a real plan (not the 10 day free trial listed at the bottom of the sign up page).

Try something else, unless you are brave enough to iframe the page and hide the offers presented @ the top of the page, I imagine they know this fucks affiliates so would bitch about it and not pay out.

Dammit.

I gotta do more research before I start these things.

i would not do Gamefly, especially for a noob. Pretty competitive.

But here are some tips on yout LP you can apply to any offer.

1. having the headline in the header of the site isn't a good idea (i DON'T mean to not put a headline on top, i mean to not put it in a way that it looks like a header/logo/site name lockup). Most people skip the header b/c that is where the logo is. i looked straight at the "free 10 day trial..." line in the white area. which leads me to....

2. Have an emotional headline. Don't try and get too creative. But speak to my emotions. "10 day free trial.." is a feature. Give me a benefit. Maybe have a diff LP for each game system KW you bid on. So if somone bids on "PS3 games" your headline is "Play your favorite PS3 games FREE" and then a sub head about the 10 day free trial at gamefly.

3. Have a quick sell, and then a long sell. Your quick sell is for the people who just need a tiny bit of convincing and are ready to buy. The long sell is for skeptical people.

To do this, have your quick sell be no longer than two paragraphs. And the first paragraph should not be more than two lines. You want to lead people in quickly. The second shouldn't be more than 4 lines. Then have a HUGE call to action button. "Sign up now" or something like that. then below that, keep selling. Maybe a headline like "5 reasons Gamefly is better than renting from a store" and have some bullets. and then more body copy if you want. And then at the bottom another Call to action/ button.

4. Hire an LP designer. Your page isn't the ugliest thing ever. But unless your going to make your site look like a non biased review site or games blog, don't try and make your LP with wordpress. it just does not look that good.

But like i said. Do a little more research and try something other than Gamefly. Don't be afraid to go with offers that have low payouts. I make a good % of my rev on offers that pay less than $1.50.

hope that helps...

Use "list-style:none;" in the styling of your ordered list; dots on the far left are ugly.

Also, I'm blind to standard sized ads and look straight past them. That's bad, because i'll not click on your aff links. Give me a button/action/link/something that looks like it's part of your site rather than an ad.

^^^ Damn, I couldn't have said it any better myself

You can also check out Images&Words "HOWTO" thread in the affiliate marketing section, but this is priceless as well

Thanks for the advice, there is a lot of good stuff here. I'll definitely be tweaking this and probably trying another offer, maybe Blockbuster or Netflix.

uhhh..... Don't think blockbust or netflix will be any easier than gamefly....
Pick an offer than research the competition to see if it's something you think you can do. Don't just pick random offers that everyone else seems to be doing and then try them...

And PLEASE don't come back saying your gonna try Vista Print

Sounds like you are simply picking an offer with the highest payout. Generally a big mistake unless you really know what you are doing.

Offer aside, all your links are just banner ads. Not something that works to well.

If you are picking offers, it's as important to find one that CONVERTS as it does that pays out well. Look a the EPC and/or ask your AM which offers are converting really well...Hope this is useful info.

i don't see the bottom banner as a button. i would suggest you make your own button and add a stronger call to action on it.
