Hello all,
Not sure where this thread should go.... so I figured I would post it here.

The Scenario: I quit working for the man about 2 months ago much thanks to this site and I'm working on a big boy business. FINALLY!! It is modeled after the niche directory. I'm to the point where the site is practically finished and ready for revenue generation and furthermore accepting invoices and printing receipts etc. My funds are limited to an extent... I saved up enough from my previous job for living expenses for 8 more months (so realistically 6) while I venture into AF. I have a CC i'm willing to use for business expenses.

The Advice: I'm looking for some recommendations on an affordable laser printer/fax system to help launch that is isnt too expensive. Something that with print at laser speed and quality and have the ability to fax.

Is there any online fax service that would enable me to send and receive faxes through broadband? Or would that require a land line?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated! THanks ladies and gents!

A while ago, I had to come up with the same solution for another business, and I came across a Brother multi-function unit, priced somewhere around $600.

It was a copier, scanner, fax machine, and laser printer. You could also buy a network card for it (somewhere around $50 - $100), and make the thing a network printer.

I could be wrong, but I think if it was networked, you could also fax documents directly from your computer.

It'd take some digging to confirm all that, but from what I recall, the machine was pretty handy, printed good, saved a lot of time, and the price was right.

Granted, you're not going to copy anything at the speed of a traditional copier, but having all that for around $600 is a pretty good deal, imo.... of course, that was about 5 years ago. Could be cheaper by now.

I'm using trustfax and it works great. Its cheaper than the more popular online fax services and is dead reliable. Faxes come in pdf format to you automatically. $40/yr for a basic plan with your own toll-free number.

The problem with using your own fax machine for receiving is you have to keep an analog phone line available all the time. Fax over voip doesn't work right, and sucks when it does.

HP laserjet 1010 or 1012 is a kickass laser printer for only ~$100+

I have one of those.... very highly recommended. The only short-comings it may have is if your business needs to send anything via PCL or similar. A good example would be printing from an AS400.

But thats fairly rare, and if you can afford an AS400, I can't imagine why you'd be trying to save a few bucks.
