Strange request from a client that has a signup system, but they want a list of fake names that people often use to signup for online services.

Anyone have anything like that?

It depends on how they are being generated. You're better off looking for patterns in the usernames you have already. Most common are combinations of 2 or more of:
fname, lname, random number, dictionary word, finitial, linitial, etc.

Al Coholic
I.P. Freely
Jacques Strap
Seymour Butz
Mike Rotch lately
Hugh Jass
Bea O'Problem

Too name a few!!!!

You'll have to go manually through a list of hundreds of them, then group them by common patterns, then try to do a good job of filtering them out without too many false positives.

So you'd see names in the form of "john ffssssfs", easy to filter out, check for eg. 3+ consonants in a row.

One of my sites gets hit with stupid signups where the first and last name are not only identical but nonsensical (ie Elignorenti Elignorenti). Makes it easy to spot the fake accounts but I don't understand if you're going to code up a registration bot why not take the time to pull from a list of real names?

Thanks for the help guys.

They don't have the data yet. I tried to persuade them to not worry about this until they actually have fakes coming in but w/e.

I used to scrape real reddit and vbulletin usernames to avoid this kind of detection. Username should be one of the last things to look at after ip, geolocation, email domain, etc.

Sounds like they just want assurance they aren't getting bogus sign-ups.

You can tell them:

1. Adding a Captcha will reduce spam by XX Percent.
2. You can limit the amount of signups per IP to reduce multiple "bogus" signups.

If that doesn't work, just generate a random list of fake names to make them happy.
