Anyone experience this? Only actions I have taken - site has been 1st page top spots since inception. I did the following:

1. Took adsense off the site for the auction.
2. Posted on Flippa for sale

Now site is not in top 50 of Google - still indexed but gone from the front page.

Any insights?

When did this happen?

The May Google Caffeine update fucked a lot of affiliate store type sites. The final changes were still taking effect early June.

although, what type of a signal taking adsense of your site send to google.

This happened today.

Yesterday I posted it for sale and pulled Adsense. From reading other auctions people seem to regularly pull adsense when posting a site for fear of "click bombing" and the effect it may have on their other sites with the same Adsense account.

Just gone - what a pain in the ass.

I would look further for other factors.

I've put adsense up and pulled it and put it up and.. etc.... Google would not penalize you for this, because they want you to be able to properly test your results, change things around, try ads in different places, and be free to design your site and redesign it. I've never noticed a huge ranking difference from that.
It could have been a coincidence that's unrelated?
What might happen that would cause it accidentally, adsense scans the site's text for it's content, and displays ads relevant to the content, thereby adding more relevant keywords... Is it possible, the keywords from the ads themselves were helping your rankings? If this is the case, you could replace them with text when pulling them and put something like "*keywords* ads go here" ?

I wouldn't put it past Google to scan for sites for sale with a bot, and reduce rankings if your site is known to be for sale.... but I have not heard of this happening.

Is there anything else you changed? Did you accidentally cause an error somewhere or something?

I noticed a site I had that was always #1, drop to #3 on G. Posted on Flippa and no other changes.

It never had adsense.

I think it happens. Not sure why. Could be more traffic coming to the site and bouncing back to serps. Could be the Big G is scraping flippa.

My site was basically g00gle free, no adsense, gwmt, or g000g analytics.

Not clear what is happening.

Have organic traffic numbers dropped by a lot?

...were you just looking at customized Google search results the whole time? :D

Thanks for the input - I am going to chalk it to coincidence - do a little quality building and just let it ride for awhile - too bad because it was bringing in $50/mo - I know chump change to everyone around here....

bay37 question about was I looking at "customized Google search results" I assume you mean it was tailoring results to me - but I do not think so - I did use the SEOMoz rank checker (not certain if that taints your site or not) but I was getting Adsense & pageviews before and nothing now - literally 0.

Similar thing happened to two sites, one of mine and one of an associate. His had been #1 for the better part of a year and, boom, knocked down to not even in the top 500. My site wasn't ranked high to begin with as it's fairly new, but it's pushed down to low 300's now from high 50ish.

His site just came back today, but another keyword it was beginning to move up on has not returned. Not sure if this is Mayday or not, but the drop happened last week for both of us.
