Full Details On Twitter’s Long-Awaited Ad Platform: Promoted Tweets

I think this quote from Twitter's COO Dick Costolo sums up the fact that Twitter is being run by a bunch of complete fucking idiots.
“It will be fascinating. Non-traditional. And people will love it… It’s going to be really cool.”

So you're probably thinking ZOMG TITS. Wrong. This is an example of an ad:

Consider this: The ads will only appear in search results. According to Twitter there are 750,000,000 searches per day on Twitter. An unknown amount is conducted by bots and therefore never viewed by any human.

pretty stupid if you ask me ... this seems more like reddit ads.

I'd like to see a similar platform to FB ads on twitter instead

Just out of curiousity though.. is twitter making any money at all aside from investors?

Nope.

And they're not even trying. Last week they bought Tweetie, a very popular Twitter iPhone app that costs $2.99 on the app store. Twitter has already changed the price to free.

I think the issue would have been a relative lack of targeting.

this seems to be a paralysis by analysis situation at first glance but given the amount of VC money involved i think there is pressure to move past simple CPM ads which is why they rolled with this.

Haha, my friend has a private angel type fund that gave money to one of the VC's in twitter, he's trying to sell his shares, cuz he thinks the "buzz" is dying down. Its too much like an fb update. And yes, he said they are pretty much clueless as to how to monetize all of it.

lol u guys are dumbasses if you think they wont be profitable at some point

they are a global platform

essentially every global platform is capable of turning a high margin profit if the costs are kept reasonably low

the thing is, i'm kinda surprised that american companies arent anywhere near as fluid at executing multiple projects under one company/brand like asian companies. the major asian media companies all run a news site, a game portal, a social network and browser games. american consumer internet companies are bizarre. myspace could have been baidy + tencent + perfect world + aol if they just stopped licking their own nuts for 5 minutes and executed their brand on multiple sites and medias. now its twitters turn and they're still in my opinion blinded by the theory of one product, one focus which worked well for a lot of american internet companies (umm google & facebook & apparently not myspace...) but not the major profit making conglemerates of the world. then again it would suck for them if they just randomly started making browser games/IM client/news site and adoption rate was abysmal. still they have global reach and a massive advantage over any other company, just like myspace did/does. they would still get some sort of traction and sell advertising against that traffic which is what ads up to $$$

I don't think they want to make money they want google to buy them or microsoft or someone. .

That's quite possible since Twitter creators Evan Williams & Biz Stone were also behind Odeo & Blogger. Both of which were sold to Sonic Mountain & Google, respectively.

So kinda like domain flipping... X 1 Million. ;)
