I'm looking to buy a few established sites. Nothing big, going to spend around $3K in total (but would prefer 2-3 smaller sites instead of 1 large site). I know of SP/DP/Ebay .. are there any other marketplaces you guys recommend?

and, what I'm more concerned about, is that this is the first time I'm buying a site/business online. Is there anything I should know? How to not get scammed, etc..

Sitepoint is great for buying sites. So is DigitalPoint. But you have to skim through really really hard on Digitalpoint.

On Sitepoint buy only from members who've a track record of selling good sites. And look for previous posts and everything.

If it's your first time buying websites, make sure you see atleast 5 months worth of revenue and traffic. Also spend sometime on the site you're buying, make accounts etc. and look around and see if you'd really like to buy it. Also remember to ask the seller about the time required in order to maintain the sites, also the money required for hosting + the money spent on promotion.

Informative post, just what I was looking for. I'm sure it'll help out other people here too.

Thank you!

I fell for a trap on the first site I bought.

The site was new and traffic + revenue was good. What I failed to realize was that it was all social media (Digg, SU) traffic and 90% of it went away 3 days after I bought the site.

So if possible have them show a screenshot of traffic sources in GA or better yet the individual traffic sources.
