After seeing (and enjoying) these threads I immediately wanted to understand how you seasoned Internet Marketers were getting results on page 1 relatively quickly, and I attempted to put my SEOmoz/Noob knowledge to the test but I've come up more or less stumped.

I can see from Open site explorer...

1. Lots of (hidden) internal linking
2. Lots of NOfollow/spammy blog comment link profile
3. Sort of diversified anchor text, but not really.
4. 1k + tweets on each

Basically, with the exception of social signals (They seemed to provide a slight boost to a few articles I wrote last month) the very principles of FISHKIN/Cutt SEO seem to have been violated yet the results speak for themselves.

What's going on here, gaywebmasters? Am I beginning to get *it*?

There is your problem. You follow the masses of other SEO newbies. But you felt deep down in your soul, there was something more. Something others were not telling you. And now you have discovered the world of WickedFire.

Ask yourself, if there was no Golden SEO tips, tricks, and hidden gems within these walls, would Matt Cutts be viewing our community on a daily basis?

Welcome To WickedFire.

You're talking tactics. The specific tactics that are used to rank in one query space may not necessarily work in other query spaces.

What you need to be focusing on is strategy. You need to be asking yourself why a certain set of sites are on the first page for any given query, what characteristics these top websites share, and what you can take & apply to your own site to become a better result for that given query.

SEO is not rocket science. It's difficult because people don't know how to think for themselves.

Thanks for the responses.

I always saw the Art of SEO/Seomoz etc as introduction texts - not the definitive guidelines.

I'm just going continue lurking here, and work on a few projects/ideas I have.

One last question I have here is that testing and attempting to find patterns/trends is extremely important to actually get a "feel" for the algorithm and to test what works but how can I do this on a budget?

e.g Could I just set up loads of free blog.wordpress.com sites and play around with these entities? I have my doubts as to whether the tests would be very valid due to the sub-domain...
