I've spent the last two days submitting my new site to every type of directory regardless of PR score and relevancy. Then it occurred to me that having low PR backlinks and irrelevant backlinks could hurt my site. It is true?

You now just start thinking about that. It won't kill you, but its better to get relevant keyword links. Yes

They don't hurt you, except in the sense that you're paying money for a worthless service.

There is a simple rule on not getting hurt by the backlinks supported by the other websites.

1-Don't use word cloud script based back links
2-Don't use backlinks that come from spamming based websites

If you do this you will be ranked higher and you wouldn't think twice on doing anything related to link building.
