I've recently started playing around with Second Life just because I was curious. In case you don't know 'Second Life' is a virtual online world where you can meet people all around the world... at least that's what I thought it was.

Turns out Second Life is HUGELY expansive, people run business on there, people sell and buy land on there, people make some serious FUCKING MONEY.

Check out this article: chickjunk.com -make-money-in-second-life/

It's about the first millionaire to make their entire fortune of second life.

Basically they have currency called Lindens and 250 of those equates roughly to 1 US Dollar (I think around that anyway).

Anyway I noticed some places that offer free lindens and then I realised how they were offering it - they are getting people to complete affiliate offers for lindens. Check out this site for example: Earn 2 Life - your second life online money making opportunity

I'm pretty new to second life and only really just realizing the potential. I probably wont do much with it but I am curious as to if anyone is or knows anything more about it.

(Forgive me if this is old news but I did a search for threads with "Second Life" and couldnt find one)

Dont know if its old news here or not. But that incentive offer technique is an interesting spin on things. Ebay has 100k lindens listed at $19.99.

I'm pretty sure I could pay some people to generate them for me at a low cost.

Might be worth exploring.

i was thinking about exploring 1/2 life for profit potential, then i figured out that would make me a dork.

Yeah I heard about people doing this for awhile now. A few years when I heard about it, my video card wasn't supported but I'm definitely going to have to check it out now. Apparently you can create things like buildings and other objects through some API they provide. I saw a news story on someone who simply designed buildings in this game and was making a full time income. I also heard of someone who exploited a hole in their API to dump gold coins over the whole map. I think besides actually trying to generate lindens or sell crap on there, you may be able to do some marketing to all the "foot traffic" in the game, maybe "build" a sign with your domain name or some shit.

Second Life still needs a lot of work before it can become successful it definately has the potential but they really need to re-organize the entire system.

I've been on it for close to a year now.

What's the rate of inflation for the linden?

Here is a quote from there website

Several online resources allow residents to convert Linden Dollars into US Dollars and vice-versa. Rates fluctuate based on supply and demand, but over the last few years they have remained fairly stable at approximately 250 Linden Dollars (L$) to the US Dollar.

I used to mess around with Second Life a lot before they updated and my video card no longer supported it. I found the best way to make money on there was to play poker against Dutch teenagers.

There's money to be made in all the online worlds that have large user bases.
In WoW, there are full time businesses that "Gold Farm". They basically pay people to play WoW for an 8 hour shift, and then sell the items, gold, and even characters, generated by those. Saw a documentary about it the other week actually.

2nd Life at least gives you the option of making money by being creative.

The idea of trading in game currency and items for people doing affiliate offers isn't new, but it certainly is under utilized. Maybe you can figure out a way of getting them to complete the offer in game (no idea how to do it, but people are clever here, and 2nd Life DKs are available), and then even give them an in game object for it as those are infinitely reproducable, without damaging the in game economy or your own wallet.

Basic items like clothes are ok, but you'd want it to look good. Clothing "designers" are a dime a dozen in SL.
People are much more likely to go for some sort of animated accessory that adds appeal to their character, like a pet. Off-the-shelf Intelligent Agents have made some good progress, so all you'd need is some interesting and well animated bodies to put them in.... Like SPIDER BABIES!!!

Arkad: Not as bad as it is with WoWGold

kingofsp: Formalized gambling's been banned from SL due to it being an American program, the Linden being a convertable currency, and Linden Labs not having a gambling license. Wagering In Second Life: New Policy « Official Second Life Blog

Problem with SL is the population - most of the 'claimed population' are alt characters or inactive users.

There are opportunities in there, however. I've been researching it for about a year, but I haven't quite made my mind up about it just yet. I know one or two people who do manage to make a full time income on there.
