I'm sure this has been asked many times, however, I have yet to read some real insight into this question.

If you're building a large content network of sites is it best to use 1 domain and have many pages ie) www.example.com/page1, www.example.com/page2

Or, is it better to have 100's of domain names, each specific to the sub-niche you are exploring ie) www.example.com, Example 1, example2.com

What's the advantage of having many domains linked together, rather than just having many pages? Is it that big of an advantage that it makes sense to pay hosting and domain fees for all those domain names?

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

I prefer many small sites rather than one big site. Because in my opinion it's easier to gain 50-100 daily visitors to each site of the network than a lot of visitors to a single big site.

And if one of your small sites (niches) is really kicking off you can still develop it.

I prefer just to focus on one site. But as you are doing quite a few niches, then maybe you will be better of with having seperate domains for them all. If you want to promote different niches then it's better to promote each domain then each directory of one whole domain. The reasons for this is because a large majority of web directories do not allow deep linking. They will only allow a top level domain to be included into their directory.
