Depends on your project... my background is in selling broadcast advertising, so I'd be happy to give you pointers if you need/want any.
Ahh yea but the costs are starting to become really astronomical. Sure you can do research there are tons of gems out there but I never did it as far as being a network affiliate or anything like that. I was advertising directly for a guy who had his own product line where I was able to make much more than any network could ever pay me.
I'm sure you already know this but the key for me was targeting sites that required user registrations. This took a lot of work to start talking with people that either ran or were part of the management teams for the sites. I then had to compile multiple conversations just to get an idea of their userbases and demographics. I dont doubt their is still a lot of money to be made, but the amount of research into a project can be overwhelming and really take its toll. Especially with some of the prices you have to agree to just to make an initial insertion order.
