Mediatemple - Mysql 5.1 - Prosper202, Anyone?

Just signed up for a mediatemple VPS (DV account) only to realize that their shared accounts are the only ones running mysql 5.1+.

Has anyone successfully upgraded from the default mysql 5.0.45-7.el5? Mediatemple's tech support won't assist with the upgrade and said that it might cause issues with Plesk. On the other hand, they did say that other customers have done it successfully but didn't have any info or resources to recommend.

Hopefully you guys can give me a pointer or two, my last resort would be to jump on odesk and try to outsource it (although I'd rather not trust someone in ukraine on my server.)

I believe you have to upgrade to MySQL 5.1 (using RPMs) and then recompile PHP and Apache.

Appreciate it man, read through the tutorial and honestly don't have a clue where to begin. I know next to nothing about server administration but have somehow always squeaked by. I'm gunna do some reading on it though, see what I can pick up.
