Been through all the threads I could find about recommendations for member sites & picked up wishlist to try, and here is the problem I'm having with member sites using wordpress.

I want as little friction on the signup as possible - just want to use first name & email. While I'd like them to login in the future, the market is a bit fickle so I want to clear as much on the front-end as possible.

Also want to be able to integrate my autoresponder at the same time for backend sales - I know my market opens emails. Wishlist has this integration, but forces separate username & email address & also requires selecting the password. Plus integrating on my own web pages is a bit of a pain - they like to use their own custom signup pages.

Anybody know of a script (wp or not) that will do simple member sites that can have fully customizable registration forms (maybe autogenerating the password to send via email, using their email as username)?

Can you explain this again? I'm confused on what exactly you're problem is.

aMember does this perfectly. I just integrated it with a wordpress blog and and it automatically just slaps a clean white form in the middle of the page and keeps your header, footer, everything.

You're not going to find an out of the box solution that does EVERYTHING. Whether you want to use wordpress as a front end doesn't really matter either. You need to look at the membership script as its own seperate entity.

aMember does have a wordpress plugin for logins and registration, but I had to drop some money to get it to redirect properly and to stop having issues with chrome.

Also, aMember was definitely built by 100% coders. These guys have no clue when it comes to usability or ease of use. So if you want to make all of these customizations, you need to be ready to hire someone on elance or from the aMember forums to make it do exactly what you want.

The thing I like about aMember though is the admin interface is really simple. It also handles rebills nicely and integrates with some of the major payment systems.

If there are any specific 3rd party services that you NEED to integrate with amemember then I would suggest joining their forums first and doing a search for that 3rd party service's name and see what comes up.

a member script that can

A) create an account just using name & email - I don't care if it has to email the login details to them (such as their username & autogenerated password).

B) be flexible enough so I can drop it on my homepage, sidebar, etc - integrated in my current content & not requiring me to go build a separate page for it. After all, if I can meet condition "A", it's just a 2-field form.

A) I'm 99.9% sure that aMember offers either different user tiers/levels or offers free membership and account signup or BOTH. I've seen questions similar to yours in the forums, but my amember needs have been very specific and I never needed help with what you need help with.

B) This is totally possible. You just might have to pay someone $20 to do it for you.

Just create a free account and contact them through their help desk. They should get in touch with you within 24 hours. Also, try hitting up some of the 3rd party providers in aMember's sub forum.
