Question related to cost per sale campaigns: If a visitor clicks on an affiliate link on one of our pages / banners / search ads, a cookie is placed. Let’s say it’s a 45 day cookie.

The visitor goes to the merchant’s site, but doesn’t buy anything. The merchant site places a separate cookie for retargeting purposes, and the visitor is shown merchant's banners as they surf over the next couple of weeks.

If, 7 days later, the visitor clicks one of the merchant’s banners, and subsequently makes a purchase, does this overwrite the original affiliate cookie?

Thanks

In this instance though, does the merchant's cookie overwrite the affiliates? Or is it just affiliate cookies that vie for last click?

This is an important question as site retargeting continues to get bigger.

i believe it will overwrite. lets c what others have to say, its been a while since i dealt with some physical products/brand merchants

Quick update:

I exchanged emails with Jason at ShareASale (who is both knowledgeable & helpful, btw). He indicated that in the example above, the affiliate cookie will NOT be overwritten.

good to know thanks for sharing, so i was wrong lol.

sorry edit: it actually makes sense coz the merchant isnt using a shareasale link to bring the visitors. If another affiliate runs a campaign and then he would overwrite your cookie

sorry for all the confusion
