...and they timed it to coincide with the release of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.

Anywhere between an estimated 600,000 and 1 million players who use Microsoft's Xbox Live gaming service will be cut off from the service because they have modified their game consoles or played games that were illegally downloaded from file-sharing sites, according to the company.

"All consumers should know that piracy is illegal and that modifying their Xbox 360 console violates the Xbox Live terms of use, will void their warranty and result in a ban from Xbox Live," Microsoft said in a statement Wednesday.

That's were "connected to their network" comes in play, or you believe that they can't find a way to find out that xbox was mod chipped? So they ban you not for ripped game but for modified box.

Ever heard of a Mod Chip?

You don't need one, you just modify the DVD drive's firmware. (This is how it's done nowadays)

Also, now Microsoft has a million new people with NO ACCESS TO XBOX LIVE. <- Why would these people buy the game now? They can't play online...

If they want to play online they have to buy a whole new box. Fuck it, at that point I would just buy it for my PC. I say to hell with Microsoft. :as he's using windows 7:

A buddy of ours, who works at Ubisoft, is sending us a pre-release of Assassins Creed 2. He says that we got to disconnect our 360s from the internet if we plan on playing it before the 17th, otherwise, Microsoft will ban our accounts. Our accounts are not flagged to play the game before the release date, so microsoft assumes it's pirated.

If they were moding the box in the first place, what makes you think they were buying the game?
Casual piracy. Lots of people download stupid little games like Infernal to pass the time, and save their money for blockbuster titles. Microsoft just lost a million potential customers.

stupid fucks... the decline of microsoft after gates left..

the only reason windows and office is used by everyone on such a scale is because many people pirated it... the people that did not wanted it so they purchased it...

basically it is like a phone... if only a few people had it then most people would not get it, but if many people had it then you would almost certainty get it too, then this goes into developers developing shit for windows because of a large amount of users (users = $$$$$)

I am to lazy to go into this... but basically if you got rid of all the pirates for windows (same as xbox games..) then people would eventually choose something else like the penguin or apple (they are both much superior to anything Microsoft can ever put out)

Many saw this coming already. Around the time the 1.61 firmware came out for the Samsung/BenQ drives.

Modern Warfare 2 was released almost two weeks ago on the scene though, but M$ may have waited until the official release date to coincide with the mass ban to "prove" a point. Not sure if they ban by IP (there was talk of this), by gamertag, or by MAC address (per console). Probably one of the latter.

Regardless, new firmware is already being reworked and is said to be the most "ban-safe" ever, lol. We'll see. I have both an unmodded and a modded box just in case. ;)

I'm not surprised, piracy is out of control and online services like this are the next generation of DRM. Love it or hate it, the only way to protect copyright these days is through 3rd party services.

There's a reason that lots of games don't come out for PC now.

Do you really have to ask how they know that their software that runs on their hardware and is connected to their network was ripped?

I understand that, knucklehead. Maybe I wasn't clear in my question.
I guess this proves that MS actually has some potentially privacy-violating callback routines build into their system then.
